Community Resilience Defib

Our project will be to purchase a new defibrillator which our community volunteers will use to provide lifesaving treatment to anyone who needs it on Irvine beach and as part of our community outreach projects. Volunteers will be trained how to use the defibrillator, increasing their existing skillset around first aid, increasing resilience and building their confidence to use the lifesaving piece of equipment.

Our volunteers benefit from reduced social isolation by volunteering at Coastwatch through the day and at weekends, benefiting their health and wellbeing. Having equipment such as the defibrillator is essential to providing that service for volunteers and the public. All our volunteers learn from each other’s varying experience and Coastwatch has a sense of community spirit among the volunteers, building positive relationships within the community.

 

Breakdown of costs:

Mindray C1A Semi-Automatic defibrillator - £1100

Coastwatch will subsidise the additional £100 from our own funds.

Supporting this project will allow members of the community access arts and culture for free; breaking down the barriers often experienced for those accessing the arts.

 

We are hoping for your support in order to cover the venue hire of the Barony Centre and travel expenses for our artists.

Venue hire: £240 (£15 per hour) of each event (8 weeks in total).

 

Travel expenses- estimated cost of £15 return from Glasgow to West Kilbride.

20 Artists in total =  £300.

 

Payment to our emerging artists (20 artists at £20 per session, before public donations) = £400

Adult Drama

Triple Act Theatre and Arts: Adult Drama

Building upon the foundation of our longstanding Adult Drama group, which has been a source of empowerment for individuals, aged 18+, in the Three Towns and North Ayrshire since 2015, we are excited to offer immersive classes led by industry professionals. Our goal is to inspire both our current attendees and newcomers to refine their acting abilities, delve into the art of scriptwriting, and showcase their own creative performances. Our vision for this current group entails the creation of a unique performance that will unfurl as participants embark on this artistic journey, rekindling a captivating local Scottish legend, ‘The Flannan Isle mystery’.  Under the guidance of a professional Theatre director and theatre maker, participants will cultivate skills in devising, improvisation, script interpretation, and enhancing their vocal and physical performance prowess. Our mission goes beyond just creative growth. In the aftermath of the COVID-19, many people have struggled with isolation, loneliness and lacking confidence in social situations, our Adult Drama group offers individuals a chance to join a group of likeminded people and reduce social isolation. We believe in promoting enhanced mental well-being and fostering adaptable skills that extend beyond our sessions, including, contributing to securing employment prospects and educational opportunities. Our classes are be situated within local venues, which are easily accessible by public transport or within walking distance, which also promotes exercise and physical health. We prioritize marginalized communities in our initiatives, striving for equity. Our Adult Drama class is offered at an affordable price and to make sure participants are given the chance to attend and are not hindered by financial barriers. Over the years, we've nurtured a vibrant community of passionate Arts enthusiasts, nurturing camaraderie, and enthusiasm among our members. Our aspiration is to nurture and expand this Adult Drama group, ultimately creating a performance that instils a sense of local pride within the Three Towns, forging partnerships with local businesses and venues, and fostering connections that contribute to the physical and mental well-being of our participants and the community at large.

Dementia Cafe

Dementia Befriending, Wellbeing Cafes - Ayrshire independent Living Network

Dementia Wellbeing Cafe has recently opened on the 21st July and runs every Friday in the Argyll Community Centre from 1-3pm.  It is for people living with demenita and the unpaid carer, friend or family member to come along to have a chat and a cuppa and meet other likeminded people to provide support.  There is also releveant support organisations that come along to answer any questions. 

The money will be used to reemburse volunteer expenses, replensih cafe stock e.g. tea/coffee biscuits etc to enable us to continue to provide the cafe free to people to, ensuring that cost is not a barrier to people attending.

The Frew Archive Project

Our project aims to save an at-risk collection of documents donated to Kilwinning Heritage from the former Hugh King & Sons solicitor's office on Howgate. The building was also formerly a bank, and the collection contains around 20,000 documents from the bank and solicitors offices. The documents have been very poorly kept and require intensive cleaning to save them and record any information we can gather. We will clean and record these archive documents which will be available for future research into the people of Kilwinning.

The project will be led by a team of volunteers and will be trained by staff from Ayrshire Archives on how to safely and accurately clean and record these documents. The volunteers will benefit from the project on a personal level as there is a good cohesion in our volunteer team and any new volunteers will be welcomed. Some of our volunteers benefit from the project as it gets them out the house and taking part in an activity which is very beneficial for them due to the relaxing nature of the project and repetitiveness of the tasks. This reduces their risk of social isolation and increases their skills by getting training and brings people together.

Building community spirit is also a key part of the project as the information gathered from the archive could provide a new insight to the history of Kilwinning and some of the unique individuals who once lived in the town. We intend to make the archive available for any future members of Kilwinning Heritage and the public where appropriate to inform research and future projects involving the history of the town. We hope that all the volunteers involved in the project will work collaboratively and we will provide social opportunities for them to network and make new friends/ develop relationships in the community.

Cafe Solace at Bridgend Community Centre

Cafe Solace Kilbirnie and Kilbirnie and Glengarnock Community Association

Kilbirnie and Glengarnock Community Association have gifted Cafe Solace Kilbirnie use of a section of the community garden, that Cafe Solace Kilbirnie are going to utillise as a community garden to grow our own vegetables that will be used to make our low cost, nutritious meals. As well as growing our own vegetables our hope is that volunteers who help with the growing process will benefit from learning new skills as well as maintaining their mental health and other benefits. Any excess vegetables that Cafe Solace Kilbirnie can't use we will donate to The Wee School Pantry to help with the rising food costs facing the community. As an added Security measure we are also looking to install CCTV cameras to help protect the garden from vandalism or theft as well as preventing tools etc being stolen. We are also looking to install additional parking facillities for the vaolunteers or visitors to use whilst at the centre. Below is a breakdown of the proposed works with an estimate of approximate costing.

Scything as a method of controlling bracken on Arran

Help us to learn heritage skills for land management - The Arran Pioneer Project

Support us to build an inventory of tools, materials and resources to deliver workshops on traditional and heritage skills around the Isle of Arran. This will be with the aim of helping our communities to learn the skills to manage the land around Arran using sustainable methods.

Through the network of community gardens we have helped to establish in different villages around the Isle of Arran, we are planning to help local people to manage the green spaces in our communities through learning traditional methods such as Scything, hedgelaying, natural construction, woodcarving, carpentry, craft skills and more. This budget will go towards purchase of equipment to deliver workshops and develop educational materials that can be applied to a variety of different contexts around the Isle of Arran, buillding on our track record of prototyping sustainable methods of land use over the last three years.

Radio Studio improvements

Our Synergy Broadcast unit needs an upgrade to enable us to interview guests and to host groups of people in the studio. The upgrade will cost about £100. We'd also like to get some better seating for presenters and guests, which will cost £560. The seating would allow presenters better access to the controls and allow more people to be seated around the broadcast unit.
