Lawthorn Parent Council - Road Safety
2024-09-12 • No comments • • Irvine
The parent council, have worked closely with the pupils of Lawthorn Primary to discuss the issues surrounding road safety in the local area. Within the school there are representatives that are Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSO) who consult the other young people on issues relating to safe travel in the surrounding community area. The school has 284 pupils that travel from Girdle Toll area/ Montgomerie Park. The young people have told us that they feel unsafe when not traveling to school by car. We have a very small carpark, and surrounding areas has narrow roads where during pick up and drop off both sides of the road are filled with parked cars making it unsafe for young people to cross. Health and wellbeing is so important for our young people, being able to exercise whilst traveling to and from school safely increases physical health but also wellbeing, being outdoors, meeting friends and traveling together whilst also learning invaluable skills like road safety and independent travel. The JRSO would also like to do more initiatives from points in the community including walking buses and cycle to school programmes. Reducing car pick up and drop off also works towards the councils target of tackling climate change and young people leading the way in climate action. The JRSO have asked young people what they would like to see and they have asked for £1268.48 (inclusive of VAT)
This money would buy:
- A banner 8ft x 1ft no parking on zig zags
- ‘No parking’ sign for lamppost
- 4 parking dummies (2 drop off only, 2 no parking on zig zags)
- Traffic cones no parking x 6
- 2 pavement signs (parking here may endanger your child's life).
These items will:
- Discourage people from parking in the drop off bay and unsafe manoeuvring in the area.
- Remind parents and carers not to park or stop for picks ups keeping the area clear for safe travel in front of the school gates.
- Create safe crossing for children and young people.
The young people involved in the project said “We feel that this would be a great chance for us and the parent council to help us in our goal of encouraging more young people and families to travel safely, help the environment and improve our wellbeing. The parent council have listened to what we need, and we have really enjoyed being part of this application.”
By voting for this bid it ensures that UNCRCs Article 31 ‘A right to play’ gives young people the feeling of safety going to and from school in ways that they associate with play and connecting with others.

Our team would love to take part in several festivals across the summer break, allowing the children to experience tournament football and being awarded medals. These cost £90 per team, so with the number we have we can often register 2 teams for 7 aside games. For 3 tournaments this would cost £540.
The fee to hire the all weather floodlit pitches costs £85 per week now, so to keep the weekly costs the same for parents and not having to increase fees, the remaining £460 would go towards pitch hire and spare equipment such as bibs, cones, balls.

As a Parent Council, our aim is to help improve the health and wellbeing for all pupils by providing opportunites in the playground fro playtimes, lunchtimes and after school clubs. The project we are working on at the moment is participation in football. We have fundrasied £750 so far towards the cost but an additional boost would mean the project could start sooner and the children can begin to reap the benefits.

"My Happy Mind" Wellbeing Resources Skelmorlie Primary, Parent Council.
2024-09-12 • No comments • • North Coast
Skelmorlie Parent Council are bidding for £1000 to support the purchase of the "My Happy Mind" program and resources which will help to continue the excellent work the school currently do to support pupil health and wellbeing. The cost of the programe is approx £1500 and the School and Parent Council will use fundraising to meet the additonal costs.
The school frequently consult with children about plans for the school and ideas for developments. The children have identified that focusing on health and wellbeing would be positive for their school and that the tools and resources look like fun to use.
"We looked at different ideas to help build resilience and help when we feel anxious. We use Zones of Regulations in school and Myhappymind links to that too. We watched videos of other children talking about how Myhappymind has helped their school and we decided this would help us too."
Primary 7 pupil.
My Happy Mind is an evidence based program taught across the whole school in weekly sessions,
Meet Your Brain – Learning about how our brains work.
Celebrate – Understanding our character strengths and celebrating ourselves.
Appreciate – Developing gratitude as a habit.
Relate – Building positive relationships.
Engage – Engaging with the world.
Teaching Staff at the school will be able to use the resources to embed resillience, coping strategies and strengths based approaches into lessons across the curriculum.
“The portal looks easy to use with the lessons being designed to “pick up and go” and the resources being at hand means this will be a very manageable way of delivering Health and Wellbeing lessons.”
“Resilience is a skill we are needing to work on in our class and the techniques this programme has look to be effective in helping children with self-regulation.”
As a community we are aware of the pressures young people face, with rising levels of poverty, inequaltiy and reduced access to vital services and we are only just understanding the with the long term impact of covid restrictions on childrens development. We believe that access to the My Happy Mind Program will support children to develop the skills and resillience to cope with any challenges they face. The school is a key part of our community, and as such has the potential to embed these approaches with families and the wider community,
"The children will share sessions with parents/carers to highlight the importance of self-care and building self-esteem, resilience, and confidence. The children hope to promote this within our community with sessions for wider public at events such as the at the Nature Festival next year." Head Teacher Lynne Cathcart

We are the Junior Section of Garnock Rugby Club. We strive to keep rugby as affordable as possible to young people while providing opportunities to promote health and wellbeing through physical activity. We would like to purchase equipment and make a contribution towards the costs the club incurs to hire indoor and astro turf facilities during the winter months. This allows young people to continue to participate in rugby activities during the winter months thus supporting their health and weelbeing (physical and mental). By seeking funding we are able to keep our membership and siubscriptions fees as low as possible to ensure costs are not restrictive in people being involved in the sport.
Equipment £200
Hire of indoor and Astro facilities £800
Total £1000
IRVINE YOUTH LEGACY CENTRE
2024-09-11 • No comments • • Irvine
We have previously been lucky enough to secure Youth PB in 23/24 which allowed us to provide free bite to eat during each group for 10 months as this is something that the young people attending the centre where often asking for. Being able to provide young people with a free bite to eat and drink has allowed us to help relive the cost of living crisis from young people and their families. Which is why we would like to be able to continue having this as part of our programme. As well as our free snacks at the youth groups, the centre also hosts “Food chat and chill” on a Sunday evening which is one of our most popular groups this provides young people with a free hot meal. Between the snacks at through the week and food chat and chill the centre has been able to provide over 150 young people with a free meal in the last 10 months. We would like to be able to continue our choice of tuckshop sweets for young people to choose one per night and a range of juice for young people to access. We would also like to stock a range of noodles for young people to have when they are visiting.
water/diluting juice - £200
tuckshop snacks and crisps - £300
noodles/bread/poptarts - £500

Tourette Scotland - West of Scotland Support Group

We are hoping to arrange sports coaching sessions for our young people at The Portal in Irvine. We are also hoping to arrange a visit to Bouncestation - a local play and activity centre. We think it is really important to promote positive physical and mental health in young people who are struggling to cope with the challenges that Tourette's bring. Tourette Syndrome is a complex neurological condition. Many of our young people suffer from social isolation; difficulties at school; judgement from others; dealing with regular health-related appointments; and various other challenges. Our group, based in Irvine, is a safe space for young people - and their families - to meet in person with other young people living with Tourette's. We offer arts and crafts, sporting games and board games at our regular meetings. The aim of our group is to have everyone feel included, supported and understood.
We are hoping to put on six sports sessions throughout the year in addition to our support meetings at Bridgegate in Irvine.
Cost to hire out Portal space and a sports coach, plus provide a healthy drink and snack to each participant - £115 per session.
Cost to take 20 participants to Bouncestation - £310
Total cost: £115 x 6 = £690
+ £310
= £1000
Empowering Girls Through Rugby
2024-09-13 • No comments • • Irvine
This initiative promotes gender equality by encouraging participation and boosting confidence. The U14s Girls Team, which currently has 7 regular players, which has doubled since August 2023 and they are currently using the Irvine Ladies’ old kit designed for men, not tailored for female players. By providing gender-specific rugby kits, we aim to ensure the girls feel comfortable and better prepared, enhancing their performance and overall experience on the field. Through our attached development plan, we aim to increase the number of girls playing over the next few years. Introducing a dedicated kit will boost visibility, encourage participation, and reinforce our commitment to gender equality in sports, fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment that empowers female players to thrive.
The proposed costs are for 12 of each:
Female fitted shorts £200
Female fitted rugby shirts £800
