I’d read less. I can buy books but I prefer borrowing most of the literature I read for sustainability reasons. Not being able to access the library to borrow books would have a negative impact. Libraries are intensely important and being able to access them is vital
The changes leave me with little choice on when to attend the library. My children love to attend the library after school today chill out with a book. We often see people utilising the library to study which will have a direct impact on the attainment gaps we already have in North Ayrshire. A reduction in opening hours would mean squeezing a library visit in on an already busy Saturday, thus impacting on the variety of choice offered to my child's reading. At school they push for children to read for pleasure and in my experience you can tell which children are not afforded reading opportunities. I feel that the council would be better to push the use of the library in their drive to reduce attainment gaps however that cannot happen when they are reducing libraries and opening hours.
The hours the library is open at the moment work very well for me. I’m mostly worried about the people who have no access to internet, about the parents with young children who come to encourage their wee ones to pick a book and to teach them that learning is fun and reading books should be free for everyone. If you take away hours the Library is open then you are denying time and choice of time for many people. Please, please reconsider and keep the hours it is open. It is already much reduced from when I was young and could go to the Townhouse anytime from 9am-5pm then the Library moved to Cunninghame House and it was open 9am -7.30pm everyday except Sunday. My children both learnt to love reading by visiting for their library book every week. One is now an Accountant and the other is doing her PHD at the University of Glasgow.
Libraries are a vital community asset for many reasons and any threat to opening hours will impact negatively on the community - particularly smaller communities.
Libraries play a very important role in our community. To cut opening hours will be confusing for older members of the community who maybe drop in regularly. Some are only able to access one Library because of transport reasons so would be unable to go to a library that has longer opening hours. Groups could also be impacted.
Communities NEED libraries!
No late opening at my library (Irvine) will be detrimental to working people who may not be able to get there before 5.30pm. While I am not personally affected by closures at other libraries, I am concerned it will badly affect people local to them, and library services in general. Social isolation is a big issue and I think these closures/cut-backs will exacerbate this.
