The changes leave me with little choice on when to attend the library. My children love to attend the library after school today chill out with a book. We often see people utilising the library to study which will have a direct impact on the attainment gaps we already have in North Ayrshire. A reduction in opening hours would mean squeezing a library visit in on an already busy Saturday, thus impacting on the variety of choice offered to my child's reading. At school they push for children to read for pleasure and in my experience you can tell which children are not afforded reading opportunities. I feel that the council would be better to push the use of the library in their drive to reduce attainment gaps however that cannot happen when they are reducing libraries and opening hours.
The loss of evening hours will affect working people -especially those with commitments on a Saturday. When I worked evening opening was vital to me and would not like to see others disenfranchised. Why not spend the consultation cost on library services? Each year, you chip away at this vital service. Presumably this will allow you to say "no need for libraries". The what?
I belong to a reading group at the library. I am not saying this because of me but for the community in general. People in general who are lonely and need warmth in the winter. Is this just another nail in the coffin of the High Street?
The changed hours will not directly impact me, but I am concerned that there is not late evening hours on Tuesday anymore, which I believe may impact others accessing the library if they work regular 9am-5pm shifts. I am also concerned about the impact on the other library branches, including Dreghorn which appears to be severely impacted by these changes, despite having what appear to be quite healthy visitor numbers. I also worry about the mental health impact on the lovely workers at these library branches, who are always so welcoming and kind on every visit. The dedication and warmth they bring to their roles make such a huge impact for those using these public services, which are the heart of a community. I appreciate that budgets will always be tight for any local council, but North Ayrshire council should be proud of the fantastic library collection they have and the amazing staff who run and look after these facilities. These public services are vital for the community.
