Cumbrae Community Garden

Improving accessibility within Cumbrae Community Garden

2023-09-10  •  No comments  •  Cumbrae  •  North Coast

We’re planning to pave round 4 raised beds in Cumbrae Community Garden to make access easier for people with restricted mobility, such as wheelchair/mobility scooter users or those needing walking aids. The Community Garden has a positive impact on health and well-being, not only for plot-holders but for the wider community who can access the peaceful outdoor environment of the Garden and take part in organised social events. This project will encourage more participation and improve community cohesion by improving access for people with a range of mobility needs and will help us promote community growing within a more vulnerable group.

The project costs exceed the PB grant limit but we have funding in place from the National Lottery which will meet the balance.

Costs:

Slabs £1300

Additional materials, delivery costs, labour: £1500

Total project cost £2800

Funding already in place: £1800

Funding requested from PB: £1000

Irvine and District Pipe Band

New communal instruments i.e. drums - £500 Hall let hire - £100 Uniforms for young people - £250 Tutoring from professionals - £150 Total - £1000

Having new equipment would allow the band to take on more beginners and give more young people the opportunity to take part in the band. We have some New Scots in the band and would love to be able to take on more to share the culture of Scottish music. People from all over North Ayrshire come to the band and its an opportunity for people to link up and get to know new people and make friends. In terms of mental health and wellbeing, we have some people in the band who suffer from PTSD, elderly people and some who are socially isolated.

The pipe band is really beneficial for the volunteers who build their confidence running the band and getting this funding would mean a lot to us in terms of increasing capacity and learning how to do more things with the band. We work with other voluntary organisations across Irvine to provide pipers for special events at a discounted rate and also refer people to the band who want to learn a new instrument.

Over the years since we began the garden we receive an annual inspection by the Royal Horticultural Society on behalf of Keep Scotland Beautiful.

For the last 3 years, we have had the top grade with a certificate of distinction, this by independent assessors.

Our need is to replace planters and also top soil/compost and to re-furbish the book swap cabinet doors.

The top Gazebo has been set on fire several times and we wish to make good the damage.

Also several benches have been damaged and we would like to replace 2 of these.

Micah Project Community Cookbook

Our recipe book will be a collection of simple recipes aimed at reducing waste, saving money and encouraging families to cook together. We aim to partner with other local groups within Irvine and Christmas initiatives to give this book as a gift and inspire families to make exciting food with a minimal budget. We believe it is possible to have healthy great tasting food and not pay a fortune for it and we want to excite people about making more with what they have. We can also combine the cookbook with a video or it can be used as part of an in person class and for the partners we work with on this can offer a set of seasonings to build on cooking knowledge and skills. These classes will be held in the new year when money is even tighter and can be done in conjunction with the existing warm spaces and local community groups. Good food can benefit families in numerous ways, promoting both physical and emotional well-being. Incorporating good food into family life involves not only choosing nutritious ingredients but also creating a positive food environment that emphasises balance, variety, and moderation. We hope that this cook book and classes will foster a healthy relationship with food and promoting its role in family unity and well-being.

Radio Studio improvements

Our Synergy Broadcast unit needs an upgrade to enable us to interview guests and to host groups of people in the studio. The upgrade will cost about £100. We'd also like to get some better seating for presenters and guests, which will cost £560. The seating would allow presenters better access to the controls and allow more people to be seated around the broadcast unit.

We are appying for support to allow us to provide Baby Sensory classes to our members.  Baby sensory is a fully interactive session which includes music, bubbles , puppets and sensory experiences.

By supporting the parents and carers to bond, form attachments and play with their child the child's health and wellbeing is improved and they thrive in a safe environment. This early intervention results in better outcomes for all. The babies and children have the opportunity to mix with children of their own age and stage of development and this leads to learning how to socially interact appropriately with others.

The sessions are open to all and are led by a professional in child development.

The classes cost £50 per session
