Yes these reduced hours are incredibly disappointing. We should be actively encouraging people ( especially young people) to read and use the libary as it's so beneficial. The library is a magical wonderful safe space and these reduced hours will limit access and discourage people from " popping in". The half day Saturday is already limited so why reduce it to every other week. It feels like the council see the library as an easy target and this will be the first of a thousand cuts and reductions. The next argument will be that no one is using the library. Well yes as you're making it so difficult to access it! Why should people have to travel to borrow books when we have a purpose built facility in the village? Encourage more people to come! Encourage literacy and protect these community assets instead of reducing access and availability.
I see it as a death by a thousand cuts. This is a fantastic facility in the centre of our small village. My questions is really more why NAC cannot make this work in some fashion. Perhaps we have other buildings that require more maintenance or is it really that maintaining a library in a building excludes all else? For example, why can we not have a volunteer run tourism office (there is a tourism group), a Boyd Orr Nutrition Centre with specialist books, or move the Museum out of the craped space it is in now (Council paid) into this facility. It just seems that someone is not thinking properly about this in the Council? I could be wrong, and frequently am :)
I work during the week and often use the library on a Saturday morning. Opening every second Saturday is too difficult to keep track of! A Wednesday closure in West Kilbride makes sense as other services are closed then. And with Thursday being the library's most busy day currently, why close on this day?
Would it not be better to keep the library closed on a Wednesday as this early closing in West Kilbride anyway? This would then allow some extra capacity on a Friday. Do the closures affect the banking hub making it even more difficult to use banking facilities.
Very concerned that the library would be inaccessible for most of the week. Alternating half days would cause confusion - a regular Saturday slot would be better.
