Our local library is already open for only two days each week, giving residents limited access to an important community resource. Reducing this to just one day would make it much harder for people use it. The library is a valuable space for people of all ages, and keeping both existing opening days helps ensure it remains accessible to as many residents as possible.
The proposed removal of Friday opening hours for an amenity which already only offers few hours would mean less opportunity for our locals to meet and keep reading. This for our eledery neighbours is imperative for improving memory and mental health. In holidays its an important place for our children to get together and continue learning
Children in Fairlie have not got many resources at their fingertips without having to get transport out out of the village. This means that all of the toddlers who walk to their toddler group on Fridays in the village hall would now miss out on their visit to the library and a book bug session. This is the only council provided children's activity that is available in the village and is being proposed to be removed. Bookbugs on a Tuesday would likely not therefore be attended by anyone.
It would affect my toddler and my older children in the school who therefore would not get access to books here , as I cannot attend on any other day. Like many people in the village, I work compressed hours and get a Friday off so a Friday is a valuable day to have this facility open.
We have a book club in the village and are planning on now using the library to borrow our books. Fridays are the days that we will be able to visit to order and pick up our books.
Removing the Friday would limit when I can use the library, meaning that some weeks I will not be able to go when my Tuesdays are busy. My daughter and I utilise Fairlie library most weeks. Always on a Tuesday as it’s the only time it is open after school. During the summer holidays my daughter likes to go both days as she is a very keen reader. We should be encouraging our children to read, not discouraging them by closing amenities and taking them away from our children.
I can only visit on a Friday. The Mother & Toddler group use the library on a Friday for Bookbug + storytimes and to borrow books and crafts. They do not meet on a Tuesday.
The proposed changes would have a slight positive impact for me in that a slight increase to opening time on Sat and Wed (half days) would be useful to me and the earlier closure on Tue would have no negative impact. However that would be more to do with convenience than being vital to my access/use of the library. Having previously lived in West Kilbride and used that library and still sometimes doing so the proposed timetable of two full days open at the beginning of the week, two full days closed at the end of the working week and Wed and Sat as half days on alternative weeks seems a complicated proposal not offering consistency of service over the week, within decreased hours. The decrease in opening days and hours for Fairlie Library will I believe be a negative move for that community too. The libraries are integral parts of these communities offering both services and community resources and opportunities for local community contact.

Libraries are an essential resource for any community, providing both learning and meeting spaces, as well as improving education.
I do not think hubs within districts will fulfil anything like the same function as I question how much people from other towns will use them.
