The proposed changes will not impact on me at the moment but I feel strongly that the library is an important resource for the wider Arran community, and must be supported.
I don't think there should be any changes that reduce library/reading access to kids and people in outlying areas. Cuts to school services always had for literacy and interest in reading/thinking, and access to actual facts instead of online misinformation.
Any changes to the library van would have a profound impact on me as at the moment books are delivered to me via the library van which comes fortnightly. I have a disability which makes mobility very difficult. I can order books through the library and as reading is a big part of my life I would miss the service a great deal. I look forward to my books arriving and the library staff phoning me to ask if there are any books authors, titles I would like. I value this service a great deal. In my working life working 20 years in a residential home many of the residents were enabled to keep to up their life long hobby of reading. Often friends too busy with their own lifes had no time to visit (I now experience this myself now being older) A book is therefore valued a great deal, you never feel lonely with a good book and story. If sight deteriorates audio books can be loaned. Please do not cut this service in this rural community.
At the present moment I still have a licence and can drive into Brodick to the library but I don't know how long that will last. The library van comes once a fortnight to the North end and a lot of people who use it have no transport so support the van. If you could go on the bus the library and the co-op are at opposite ends of the village and books are heavy to carry if you are walking any distance. I don't know why we are filling in this form because the decision has already been taken.
I am 82 and rely on the regular stops of the library bus as my main supply of reading material. I have mobility issues and several chronic illnesses, so I am not always well enough to travel to Brodick. A cut back in the service would definitely have a detrimental effect on my quality of life. I am very grateful to the staff for their consistently excellent service. My thanks to Nikki who always goes above and beyond to help.
Arran Library has one library in Brodick which is open 3.5 days a week and shuts for lunch. It holds exhibitions and certain classes. The library van visits each village once every two weeks. Most of the users of the van have limited mobile ability, cannot use public transport and have no way of getting to the library in Brodick. I don't see how you can cut the service any more than you already have.
School children use the mobile library bus & benefit from this resource. Also if library doesn't have opening times late anytime wont manage to use it to access books.
Because they will affect the community and possibly friends and acquintances. Library is a community resource not just somewhere to get a book. Library Van is essential for elderly people, library visits to schools. So important for child development. If you "chip away" at the library what will be next.
The library in Brodick is a really valuable resource and one I would miss hugely if it closed. It already has reduced hours of opening so please don't let there be further cuts. It is a lifeline to many on the island, young and old alike.
