Summary

We would like to purchase our cadets a soft shell jacket to help protect them against the elements whilst carrying out activities in the colder months.

Description

Irvine Sea Cadets aims to provide as much outdoor activity as possible as good old fresh air is renowned to work wonders for one's mental health and wellbeing. As a result, our primary focus is on nautical adventure and fun, even during the winter months. In addition to carrying out our own waterborne training, we also strive in helping our local community, therefore, we are very active in establishing partnerships where we can whether it be tackling environmental issues, showing support at local events or assisting our older population with anything they need help with.

Some of our internal 'weather-dependent' opportunities include rowing, powerboating, paddlesports and mountain biking, so, wearing suitable layers is an important factor in safeguarding as well as ensuring that partaking is enjoyable and comfortable.

Some of our recent partnership working includes assisting Irvine Clean Up Crew with their Big Riverbank Clean, North Ayrshire Council with their Cycling Family Fun Day and Ayrshire Vintage Tractor Club with their annual rally. All of these activities have been outdoors and occasions where extra thermal protection would have been advantageous.

We would like to purchase our 33 cadets a soft-shell jacket that will provide them with some identity as well as help protect them against the weather during the colder months. A soft-shell jacket is windproof. therefore, very effective in maintaining body temperature when faced with cooler temperatures and wind chill.

The majority of our cadets come from low income and lone parent families facing social exclusion. Our project will help combat inequalities by providing a jacket for everyone despite their wealth or background. This will create a sense of team spirit as well as boost morale amongst our young people.

As an independent charity run solely by volunteers, we rely hugely on fundraising opportunities in order to operate. The jackets are priced at £33 each so a £1000 grant would leave us with only £89 surplus to fund which comes in at only £2.67 per head.

Location: Irvine Sea Cadets are a uniformed youth training and development organisation, for young people aged 10-18, that aims to provide the best possible head start in life through nautical adventure and fun. The Sea Cadets Corps Values: Honesty and Integrity, Self Discipline; Loyalty; Commitment; Courage; and Respect, are woven into our training. This approach helps empower our young people to build and develop key transferrable skills such as confidence, team working, communication, leadership and problem solving that they can then take into their daily lives and beyond.
