Summary

We are a competitive club who are passionate about swimming. At North Ayrshire we strive to provide very best training and competition opportunities for swimmers from age seven through to national, Scottish and British championship level. We draw our membership from beyond the boundaries of North Ayrshire and have a built a reputation over many years as a club which has started swimmers on their journeys to the Olympics and Commonwealth Games.

The club has sessions at four pools across North Ayrshire The Portal, Garnock Campus, Largs and Auchenharvie. Our Swim Stars Squad is the ideal stepping stone for children who have completed their swimming level 4 lesson wishing to take the sport further.

We also have a thriving synchro swimming squad, and the club is not just for young people. Our Masters section is the perfect place for adults swimmers who want more focus and structure to the time they spend in the pool and to improve their fitness and technique by taking advantage of the same top-level coaching as our competition squads.

The club has 163 members over various squads. Coaching is led by one full time Head Coach and Assistant Head Coach, as well as volunteer coaches.

Description

North Ayrshire Swimming Club hosts 3/4, two day galas annually at the Portal in Irvine. The club is part of the West District and clubs compete to allow swimmers to achieve accredited meet times to enter SNAG (Scottish National Age Group) and British Championships. All meets are run in accordance with Scottish Swimming. The biggest cost to our club is the pool hire and expenses for officials, ie referees, judges and time keepers. We provide medals for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each age group, this also a large expense for the club. Swimming promotes many benefits for young people both physical and mentally, skills gained through swimming will be taken with them in to adults life.

Pool hire is £1000 per day, though this is currently under review.

Location: Our SwimSTARS 1 squad is targeted at children who have completed the 4th level of the Learn to Swim programme and are looking to start club swimming. Swimmers will then move on to SwimSTARS 2 where the aim is to give them a solid foundation in the four main strokes and introduce them to swimming in lanes. They will get the chance to experience racing for the first time at our Club Championships and Grand Prix’s Swimmers progress from Swim Stars into the Potential squad where they’ll get their first taste of competitions at other venues across the west of Scotland. Multiple weekly training sessions will focus on improving stroke technique developing racing skills. Swimmers in Age Group will be building on race experience by attending more meets and looking for accepted entries at West District Level. Swimmers in our Performance Squads can expect the intensity to step up with land-based training sessions as well as work in the water. Junior Performance swimmers will be looking for regular starts in West District level meets as well as dedicating more time to training. Senior Performance squad will have ambitions to race at Scottish and British Championships with the ultimate prize being places on the Scottish Swimming youth programmes. Don’t let the name put you off. This is club swimming for everyone and anyone and our members range from septuagenarians to Olympic medal winners. Our Junior Masters Squad is for swimmers aged 14-18 who are looking to either swim for fitness or transition away from our more competitive squads. Masters swimming do not have to be competitive, although there is always that option. Our coaches devise sets and organise the lanes appropriate to the level for swimmers who may looking to improve their stroke skills, swim for fitness or train for events such as triathlons. Our synchro section offers proficient swimmers the opportunity to specialise in synchronised and artistic swimming. Our swimmers compete in competitions at Local, District and National level throughout the year. Synchronised swimmers develop a high level of aerobic fitness and flexibility. They need to be strong and yet graceful, have stamina and be able to interpret and perform to music.
