Sensory Garden

Whiting Bay Primary Parent Council Sensory Garden

No comments Mhairi.Hackett Arran

Sensory gardens include features, surfaces, objects and plants that stimulate our senses through touch, sight, scent, taste and hearing.

They are places that can be designed with many different purposes in mind. They can be calming with scented plants and restful seating, an area for growing tasty food and for wildlife friendly plants, a therapeutic space for children and a learning zone full of exciting things to touch and smell.

Sensory gardens are of great benefit to children's health and well-being, the seasonal aspect of growing is educational and the validation in seeing your hard work come to fruition is wonderful. Starting children on their ecologically friendly through life.

Help us to learn heritage skills for land management - The Arran Pioneer Project

No comments The Arran Pioneer Project CIC Arran

The core purpose of The Arran Pioneer Project CIC is to regenerate Scotland's wild and natural landscapes in a way that incorporates our rural communities while securing jobs and livelihoods for young people. We help to coordinate research, facilitate training, employment and community engagement to develop circular economy and local opportunities to assist as we move towards a just and nature rich future and transition to net-zero.

We engage with local communities to determine their priorities for land use, help them to envisage how to use land within their village or community, and turn these ideas into action. We combine heritage and tradition with innovation to find sustainable and regenerative solutions to empower our communities to tackle the issues they are facing.

Our team helps to design and plan uses for community land before helping to make these ideas happen on the ground. We develop practical routes to increase the opportunities for localised food production, increased biodiversity, and vibrant and viable communities within our local, regional and national plans for a self sufficient and sustainable future.

Arran Churches Together (ACT) Food Bank

No comments Arran Churches Together Food Bank Arran

Arran Churches Together Food Bank was set up in 2011 when a concerned resident made a local minister aware that a local family had struggled to put food on the table during the Christmas period. No-one should experience food or fuel poverty however there are more than 2,000 foodbanks across the UK supporting those in need. Our foodbank on Arran provides emergency food for local people who require additional support. The Arran foodbank is independent and requires no referral - anonimity and dignity are very important and can be a problem, particularly in rural communities. The food bank can be accessed in the vestibule of Brodick Church which is open 24/7. The ACT Foodbank is the only foodbank on Arran. Our island can be a costly place to live - lack of affordable housing pushes many families into private lets which can be costly; there is no mains gas on the island, homes are heated by electricity, oil, wood or coal; food shopping is done at either local village shops or Co-op supermarket, there is no option to shop in budget supermarkets. We are aware that in recent times, there are families on Arran with people in employment having to use the foodbank

Our local supermarket displays a basket for collection of donated long life food items - these are collected by volunteers who use them to keep the food bank shelves, at Brodick Church, well stocked. Although the Arran community continue to be generous with donations, the volunteers often have to buy food to keep things topped up. Money used for these shops is taken from a fund made up of monetary donations from local individuals and organisations. However the increased cost of food shopping, means we are going through this fund very quickly.

Wee Mac Arran 2024

No comments Alison Page Arran

Wee Mac Arran 2024 is a children's book festival.

There is already a buzz of anticipation and excitement within our island community that some of Scotland's finest children's authors will be coming to the Isle of Arran.

Travel to and from Book Festivals on the mainland is both cost and time prohibitive for many families on Arran.

Bringing authors to the island for a festival breaks down social barriers with the joy of live literature accessible to all.

Following on from our successful pilot in 2022, Wee Mac 2024 events will be hosted in the Garden Room and marquees in the grounds of the Isle of Arran Heritage Museum.

The enclosed safe setting offers a relaxed and inviting environment for children and families. It provides a fabulous informal festival feel and free for all to enjoy.

Having met and interacted with our invited guest authors, we hope our young people will be enthused to read for pleasure and encouraged about the possibility of becoming writers themselves.
