Description

I moved to Largs late 2022 and created Largs Music Club soon after in response to the interest I received since floating the idea on social media.

LMC offers an informal setting for amateur musicians to meet on a regular basis and encourage and teach one another to improve their skill-level on their preferred musical instrument.

The club is growing in popularity since word is out that we existing members offer a friendly and relaxed environment for those keen to learn at their own pace without fear of judgement or impatience.  As membership is growing, so does the variety of instruments being learned and taught.

The club relies on individuals contributing their time and equipment to teach fellow members how to play their preferred instrument. With funding, I would aim to purchase equipment to make that teaching more accessible - music stands, microphones, microphone stands, a Public Address system, amplifiers, mixing desk and some basic entry level instruments to encourage those who do not own an instrument (but who wish to learn one), to join us.  These items are expensive and realistically will require additional funding from me and some other willing members to supplement any money issued following this application. However, I am confident that your contribution will assist LMC continue to grow in membership and reputation and eventually lead to the club playing music for the community.

The Public Address system is approximately £500. A couple of small amplifiers will cost an additional £500.

Our club assists develop confidence as well as musical literacy, with participants being encouraged to play live for friends and family and in time, for larger audiences, once the club starts playing local live shows as per my vision.

Feedback from participants so far evidence the mental health benefits of playing and learning in our community, a benefit I will highlight as I further promote our initiative in the community.  Our latest member told me that since moving to Largs very recently, she was delighted when, a chance encounter with a then stranger in the park led to her learning about our club. Nervous but curious, she came along with her new friend and has made many more new friends through our practice. That she is also getting better at playing her guitar, almost now seems like a bonus.

We at LMC are extremely grateful for your consideration.

Kind Regards

Tom

The case for funding from the applicant & subsequent comments have covered quite eloquently what funding would do for our group. That being said I'd like to add my support with a wee bit of my story as to why this group is important to me & why funding is so crucial for us to flourish.
Having been involved in bands & music projects when I was younger I longed to find a way back into playing & meeting other like minded folk. Over time my confidence took a knock & I felt I would never enjoy this as part of my life again. During covid I lost my mum & I was diagnosed with cancer soon after. Upon my recovery I needed a sea change & took the step of moving from a city to Largs. When I first moved here I was very isolated (& having doubts about my move) but a chance meeting with a welcoming local lead me to learning about this group. I was introduced to the LMC & I haven't looked back! I feel if it can help me in such a way it has so much potential to help other people in the community.

The LMC has recently moved to a venue which can accommodate the growing numbers who wish to learn, develop and pass on musical skills. The LMC is open to everyone, with all levels of expertise (or none) welcome. We have members who play guitar (acoustic, electric and bass), ukulele, percussion, keyboards, and saxophone and would welcome singers and musicians who play or aspire to play these or other instruments. The health benefits of playing an instrument are well documented as are the benefits of creating good social networks. Club members also meet to watch musicians playing locally. Like our founder, I am relatively new to Largs (since December 2021) and the LMC has been a great way to meet and make new friends and to build a sense of community. The LMC has grown from strength to strength. However, it is lacking in some fundamental equipment. We currently get by on a makeshift basis or by the generosity of members who are willing and able to loan equipment when they too can attend.

From the outset, the club has provided a welcoming, inclusive environment in which to learn, and foster a sense of community, regardless of the age or background of anyone keen to get involved. In its inaugural few months, it has already seen its membership grow several-fold and its open-door approach is likely to see the group, and need for equipment , to expand further, with the benefits outlined by Tom pollinated
across the community. This funding would allow the club to expand its reach further, particularly for those whose own lack of equipment may dissuade their involvement, and the collaboration, comradarie and socialisation this would otherwise afford them.

The LMC offers a great opportunity to meet others interested in a timeless passion: making music together. It's great to see somewhere offering a supportive and inclusive environment in which to learn. It would be fantastic to see the club grow and continue to help keen enthusiasts in their musical journey, fostering a community and social spirit around helping each other improve, while having fun engaging in a rewarding hobby.

This group offers an absolutely fantastic opportunity for anyone wishing to take up, learn or progress with a musical instrument. I have been a member for the past few months and have taken part in many of the sessions so far. The environment is supportive and inclusive and is led by Tom in way that takes all ability levels into account. An investment in some equipment to allow the group to record or perform in a live venue would help development and provide a focus of something for the group to aim for. It would also help the group to expand and to perhaps provide opportunities for those who may want to contribute to sound recording / live production.
In addition to the development of musical ability the group provides a high level of social interaction and support. Get togethers are frequent and always friendly and supportive.
