Project Summary

We aim to provide empowering Personal Safety training for youths in schools, community groups and youth organisations in the Three Town area, tackling subjects such as bullying, knife crime, spiking, sexual assaults, and domestic abuse, to help youths feel safer and more capable of dealing with violent situations.

Project Description

We will run over 20 Personal Safety workshops in Auchenharvie Academy, for youths attending the EmpowerEd programme, and for youths attending various youth organisations such as Girl Guides, Sea Cadets, Air Cadets, Neighbourhood Networks, etc. as well as targeting other schools in our area to offer them training courses. We also aim to run a weekly Personal Safety / self defence in our Barony St John Centre in Ardrossan to enable those youths who want to learn more about staying safe an opportunity to do so.

In total, we hopw to run over 60 Personal Safety courses/workshops/sessions over the year for youths in our area. This will equate to approx. 500 youths.

The cost of this training amounts to £1,500 (20+ courses x £20 fuel costs = £400; volunteer food and refreshments @ £15 per day x 3 instructors x 25 courses = £1,125; posters/printing/ advertising = £60. instructor insurance @ £80 x 3 = £240 Total £1,825).

We are requesting £1,000 to cover our costs, and we will cover the the remaining £825+

How have young people been involved in shaping this project?

We have already discussed this project with youths and teachers at Auchenharvie Academy. We have been successful in the Youth PB for 3 years in a row but, due to a clerical error, pupils from Auchenharvie could not vote for us last year and so we lost out. They are very keen to see this project reactivated. We have also spoken to various youth organisations in our area such as the Girl Guides, and they are also keen to offer Personal Safety training to their members. And we have been working closing with the Community Network Brokerage and their 'EmpowerEd' programme for youths who are not attending school. They are keen for us to help these youths stay safe with our Personal Safety workshops.
