A youth-led project supporting newcomers in North Ayrshire with trips, workshops, and community activities to explore pathways, skills, and social connections.

Project Description

The New Scots is a fully youth-led group supporting young newcomers (ages 15–21) in North Ayrshire. Our project aims to help members find pathways for personal growth, community involvement, and future careers through engaging activities.

 

Planned activities include:

 

  • Trips and workshops: Cultural events, outdoor adventures, hillwalking, and skills-building workshops.
  • Community engagement: Connecting young people to clubs, volunteering, and local initiatives.
  • Career guidance: Providing information about colleges, universities, and potential career pathways.

How have young people been involved in shaping this project?

How have young people been involved? The New Scots is fully youth-led, and all project planning and delivery is driven by young people aged 15–21. Members actively shape the project through a wide range of activities designed to build skills, confidence, and connections in the community. Recent examples: • Hosting sessions at Cranberry Moss Community Centre as part of the North Ayrshire Equalities Youth Forum, including workshops, cultural activities, and community drumming. • Leading and participating in outdoor adventures, including Beinn Dubh, Culzean Castle skills sessions, and a two-day hike at Gowanbank, gaining mountain-leading skills and outdoor education experience. • Attending and contributing to events like Arran Pride, where over 50 young people ran youth activities, led stalls, and collaborated with multiple youth forums. • Running workshops and events where young people share ideas, co-design activities, and engage with peers from ESOL North Ayrshire, care-experienced programmes, and other youth forums across North Ayrshire. These activities show that young people are not only shaping the project but are leading it, making key decisions, and engaging actively with the wider community. Evidence, including photos from workshops, trips, and events, will be uploaded to support this application.

Location: Because our members live across different areas of North Ayrshire, Ardeer Community Centre in Stevenston serves as the most accessible and central base for our activities. It provides a safe and welcoming space for workshops, meetings, and community events, allowing young people from across North Ayrshire to participate fully in our trips, cultural activities, and skill-building programmes.
