Garnock Valley Pipes and Drums

Investment project code: 660

Estimated Price

£1,000

Summary

Garnock Valley Pipes and Drums are committed to providing young people in the Garnock Valley with free access to chanter and snare drum lessons, which take place after school at Geilsland Estate, Beith.

Description

Our aim is to use the funding to extend our music provision within the local community.

By providing this free programme, we are making the project more inclusive and accessible to all, regardless of socio-economic or geographical barriers. This creates a sense of belonging and encourages community development as participants work together, learn from each other, and take pride in their achievements.

Weekly music lessons will provide structured, high-quality tuition that enhances pupils' cognitive skills, such as memory, focus, and discipline, while fostering creativity. Learning an instrument is known to improve academic performance across a range of subjects, contributing to the pupils' overall educational development.

The programme is directly aligned with the preservation and promotion of Scottish cultural traditions. By teaching young people the chanter and snare drum, which are integral to Scottish heritage, we are ensuring that these traditions are passed on to future generations, fostering a lifelong appreciation for Scotland’s rich cultural history.

In summary, this funding will allow us to make a significant contribution to the educational and cultural landscape of the Garnock Valley, ensuring that all pupils can benefit from the power of music education, while supporting community cohesion and the preservation of Scottish heritage.

The funding we are applying for would be spent as follows:

£972 for tutor costs. This would provide a total of 24 tutor hours @£40.50/ hour ensuring that 40 young people could access free chanter and snare drumming tuition.

£28 to provide snacks for a small celebration at the end of the 6 week block.

Location: Based at Geilsland but working throughout the Garnock Valley

Proposed on behalf of: Garnock Valley Pipes and Drums was set up in 2017 and successfully started a youth pipe band before Covid. Unfortunately, it has taken a while to get things back up and running since Covid but, with over 50 young people now receiving chanter and drumming lessons with our talented tutors, Garnock Valley Pipes and Drums is going from strength to strength and we hope this can continue with your support.
