Ardrossan

HMS Dasher was a Royal Navy aircraft carrier that blew up on 27 Mar 1943 and the parade weekend is always the closest weekend to the anniversary.  Even though it was 80 years ago, we still have family members of the crew attending each year.  On Sat 29 Mar, there will be a service at sea on board the CalMac ferry, which will stop over the wrecksite. There will be wreathes laid at the memorial at Brodick ticket office.  On Sun 30 Mar, there will be a parade at the sunken garden across the road from St Peters in Chains church, where family members and community groups will have the chance to lay wreathes, flowers and other tributes

Saltcoats Christmas Carnival

2024-09-04  •  No comments  •  lainey.mckinlay  •  Three Towns

The Saltcoats Christmas Carnival was started many years ago to provide Christmas lights in Saltcoats – this evolved over the years and has become a full carnival.  This provides a much needed free day out for families in the local community, when everything else related to Christmas is so expensive this event gives some relief from that.  The day includes, entertainment all through the town with a staged area with local and up and coming artists performing, including dance schools and primary schools, we will have 3 santas grottos including an ASN grotto (and disco) that will be fully accessible, activities in Saltcoats Town Hall, Santa abseiling from the clock tower and a large fairground. There will also be a mobile cinema street entertainers and a few other surprises!

Main costs:

Fairground £8k

Independent H&S £800

Donations to local groups for support/assisting on day £500

First Aid: £330

Santas Grotto set up, selection boxes and books = £1500

Entertainement  - Starlite (staging, PA,) £500

Road Closures, licences, & venue (town hall)  £1500

Mobile cinema £200

Abseiling Santa/street entertainment £500

Miscellaneous £1000

Marketing and advertising materials for the event donated by Clyde studios

The event is planned and organised by a small group of volunteers who have skills and experience in different areas.  External professionals are brought in for things like Health and Safety, Insurance etc.

On the day we have many groups that help including; ATC, Sea Cadets, Guiding, Scouts, and NAC community officers.

A £1000 donation would help make this event magical and give families memories that will last a long time.  In the age we are living in people are struggling more and an event like this not only gives experience and fun but takes some pressure off of parents and caregivers.

The North Ayrshire Foodbank, in partnership with the Trussell Trust, aims to establish and encourage inclusive spaces where community voices can be heard. This is achieved through a holistic approach to gardening, with the goal of addressing food insecurity by emphasizing the importance of communities coming together and utilizing their power and resilience to grow fruit and vegetables. The project's primary focus is on nurturing individuals alongside food, promoting learning, and understanding the effectiveness of a collective approach. It is open to all residents of The Three Towns and offers an opportunity to gain insight into nutritious food and contribute to improving lifestyles. The space values diversity of skills and experiences. This proposal aims to secure and develop green spaces for community use in cultivating fruit and vegetables using permaculture principles. By working with nature, we can grow a variety of produce and edible flowers, some of which can be donated to community larders to support those in need. These spaces will not only address food insecurity in the Three Towns but also provide therapeutic gardening opportunities for individuals without their own gardens.Top of FormThe project aims to cultivate a strong sense of community ownership at a local level, promoting both formal and informal education in food production. It will emphasize hands-on learning, risk assessment, and the exchange of peer-led expertise, recognizing the value of practical. In terms of environmental stewardship, the project is committed to adopting an organic-only approach to growing, promoting natural pollinators, and avoiding the use of pesticides and artificial growth enhancers. Additionally, efforts will be made to repurpose materials and explore upcycling opportunities. The initiative will also actively engage with a diverse range of cultural groups, including New Scots from Syria, Ukraine, Afghanistan, as well as long-standing communities in the Three Towns. Their participation will bring together traditional and modern cultivation practices, enriching the local food production landscape. The project is dedicated to fostering collective action and empowerment within the community with and for its members. The project's long-term benefits are far-reaching. It will empower the community by creating a sense of ownership and responsibility for the growing spaces, providing fresh produce for community larders, and offering opportunities for exercise and mindfulness. Additionally, the project will stimulate wider community engagement around food access and provision. It will also play a role in promoting biodiversity and pollinators, reducing carbon footprints, and providing valuable volunteering opportunities that contribute to increased self-confidence and wellness. This project has the potential to create solidarity and common cause in the Three Towns communities. By creating these spaces, we aim to develop conversations with community members concerning how they feel about issues they may face within the area. The community campaigner will be facilitating a mutual aid organisation style of group work with individuals and for individuals. The project will have a direct positive impact on the community as it involves 30-40 individuals in its development. An estimated 250 people will benefit from the produce, while 150 will have the opportunity to engage in activities such as storytelling and educational sessions at the project sites. This initiative aims to create spaces where people can relax, actively participate in their community, and engage in gardening based on a "do what you can" ethos. Partnerships with other organizations will facilitate directing participants to the project and providing on-site services. The Three Towns project aims to foster community ownership and sustainable practices through the promotion of organic cultivation. Participants will be encouraged to grow their own produce, regardless of their living situation. This initiative not only focuses on food growth, but also on personal development and community collaboration. By involving diverse individuals with various skills, the project will thrive, offering valuable experiences and knowledge about nutritious food and healthier lifestyle choices to all residents of The Three Towns.

The CAMEO Group

2024-09-12  •  No comments  •  Pauline79  •  Three Towns

The group meets every Wednesday, offering a welcoming safe space to bring people together. A space that is positive and supportive, allowing people to have a voice, to share experiences, to heal and to work towards better health and wellbeing. It’s free and open to all adults who find themselves struggling and feeling overwhelmed by life. The group aims to decrease social isolation while raising levels of confidence and engagement. As many of the group members have experienced trauma, addiction and/or bereavement resulting in poor self-esteem and mental health. And found themselves ‘staring at the same four walls’ before discovering the group.

The funding we're applying for would be spent as follows:

  • Sustaining the group and promoting the group to the wider community to help more people in the three towns area.
  • Staging an ‘Open Day’ style event open to the wider community to remove barriers to accessing the group. Bringing different cultures together to create a more cohesive community.
  • Weekly food provision and refreshments costs
  • Transportation and packed lunch costs for trips to destinations outside Saltcoats, to create new experiences and new memories, improving mental health

SeaSalt Streets are seeking funding to continue its successful run of events in and around Saltcoats Town Centre. These pop-up events have included a "kerbie" competition, a basketball challenge, a bird box building day and more recently, the Betsy Miller Awareness Day.

These occasions are intended to create a talking point, a feel good factor, a want to get involved, inspiring others to create their own events, thereby starting a Ripple Effect !!!

If successful, SeaSalt Streets intend to use the funding to hire 2 smoothie bikes and a life size interactive cow. The 2 smoothie bikes, 1 adult and 1 child's, each have a built-in blender which, when peddled by the individual, mixes the milk, fruit/syrup of their choice, into a healthy smoothie drink.

The interactive cow has milking teats, which, when "milked" dispenses water giving the milker the opportunity of a lifetime to "milk a cow" A unique, one-off experience which will create a lasting memory to the participants.

Estimated costs :

Smoothie bikes + insurance        £350.00                                      Interactive Milking Cow                £185.00                                      Smoothie Supplies  60lt milk,                                                             fruit, syrups, 250 cups                £150.00                                    2 x Operators @ 4 hrs each          £180.00                                    Delivery & set up costs                  £70.00                                      Promotional materials                   £50.00

  TOTAL                                              £985.00

The group will use this event as an opportunity to promote the Health and Well-being benefits of eating well, and by introducing regular physical activity, the individual can bring about personal change.

By involving families, SeaSalt Streets, by way of these interactive events, hope to continue to build up community spirit and create positive changes both to to individuals and the wider community.

Saltcoats Mindful Makers

2024-09-18  •  No comments  •  elemay  •  Three Towns

Mindful Makers brings together Three Towns adults to combat the adverse effects of loneliness and social isolation with mindfulness. This community group is run by four volunteers (no cost) and comprises weekly Crafting Sessions and a Book Group. Sessions are open to all and free of charge to users. Friday meetings are held in Saltcoats Library where the welcoming environment encourages regular attendance. Week 1: Crafting - a new skill tutored by an organiser; Week 3: Book Group; Weeks 2 and 4: crafting together. Crafting and mindfulness are beneficial and can alleviate the symptoms of anxiety, stress, depression, loneliness and even dementia (craftscouncil.org.uk and verywellmind.com). Sharing experiences can counter depression through a feeling of belonging. Feedback from participants will guide our work and shape our 2025 programme. We use WhatsApp group to share and communicate between meetings, and a new Instagram account will raise awareness.

Our bid for £800 will allow for increasing costs and will (a) continue the provision of free crafting resources so no one is excluded for economic reasons - £500 (b) enable us to continue to provide community and outreach work - £50 promotion, and (c) increase equality of access for disabled members - £250 towards transport. We need to keep our activities free of charge as it becomes harder to budget for activities to help us thrive. Our 2025 development plan calls for an occasional outside maker to lead a session for a reasonable fee. A 2023 field trip was successful, but transport costs suitable for disabled participants are prohibitive, yet because of the weather we need to plan to visit indoor venues relevant to our selected crafts.

We respect sustainability, recycling items wherever possible, and augment our funds through craft sales. We support an average of 14 members at any time - an optimum number given the donated time and effort for organisation.

Safety Training

The charity supplies thousands of second hand electical goods to those in need free of charge. This lets us recycle these items and saves them going to landfill.

To make sure that we are providing safe appliances we test every item to compliance standards. Several volunteers have already been trained but most have moved on to positive destinations and the skills need to be replaced. This one-day course covers all the skills and knowledge required to safely test, inspect and maintain portable electrical appliances.

Thank you.
