I am sympathetic to the challenging fiscal environment in which local authorities and I believe council tax should be reformed. However, I disagree strongly with reduced library services and/or opening hours. My local library was a resource as a safe space which had a transformative impact on my development and trajectory as a child. I am continually impressed with the vital work they do both as a library and a community hub.
Working office hours I often use the Tuesday 5-6pm slot although it is very tight to finish work in time for this. While Saturday is an option for those working 9-5 it is quite restrictive as its only a morning slot and people may want to use weekends to go away. I think it would be better to have a more substantive evening option such as 5-7pm/7.30pm instead of one of the week day half day slots.
I end up using Saturday mornings rather than the Tuesday 5-6 because this is too tight a timeframe. Its essentially currently tokenistic after office hours option and rathere than removing it altogether, a longer timeslot should be offered.
I am not in full time work, and so the proposed alterations to the present opening hours will have minimal impact on me. The withdrawal of the late opening on a Tuesday is not ideal.
