I rely on the library to connect with people and to take part in my writing group and book club. I use the library to research my family tree and to borrow books. I consider it to be a huge help in my emotional wellbeing. I do not drive and struggle to get to other libraries by public transport.
As an avid reader there would possibly be no times Dreghorn Library would be open from Friday to the following Thursday which would not be suitable for me. It's not always easy for me to use Irvine Library due to health reasons. Staff at Dreghorn are wonderful at helping source new authors and ordering books from other libraries. The library is always busy with community groups and I'm not sure the keyholder idea would work out in Dreghorn.
We, as a family, use the library weekly. Due to work commitments, we can only attend certain days. My children have built up a relationship with Dreghorn Library staff. My oldest is 9 years old and been coming to library from birth. Both my children are great readers and I thinkthis is because the library is always efficient in finding the books my children are interested in reading. I am also an employee at Dreghorn Early Years where community walks to the library are important. Some children do not get opportunities of the library experiences. We want to encourage children as young as possible that reading is important with closing libraries certain days this will have an impact on childrens ability to strengthen their vocabulary.
Dreghorn Library is very convenient for me. I am retired so the change in hours won't have too much impact apart from being available to visit at the times we've been used too. It seems strange that it will be shut both Monday & Tuesdays. Books finished over the weekend won't be able to be returned and new ones chosen after three days of no library. This could be an inconvenience to many borrowers. In fact if only open alternative Wednesdays this would be even longer. The proposals are disappointing.
As a regular user of the library & a member of the knitting group based there, these changes will have an adverse effect. The knitting group currently meets on Tuesdays & Fridays, so will lose a place to gather on a Tuesday. I attend the knitting group & the library to socialize with other women my age & feel involved in my community. Closing on the proposed days will limit my opportunities to socialize. After fighting to keep this & other librarys open I find these proposals shocking & the presentation of the proposals as a done deal, it feels tantamental to attempting the closure of Dreghorn library by Stealth. There are no other regularly open public spaces in Dreghorn for the community to gather without charge & I am particularly concerned about the implied reducing hours will have on older people & young children who currently use the library after school. I also feel the heart of the village is being ripped out.
It would also be very unfair on the staff to have reduced working hours and money as their lives are organised around the current schedule. Please keep the opening hours as they currently are.
I use the library frequently and would have to get used to and remember which days it is open/closed. As someone in my mid seventies this will impact on me trying to remember to check before I leave my house as it is a fair walk to the Main Street. I have used Dreghorn Library constantly since I joined over 60 years ago. It is the hub of our village with knitting groups etc, children use it regularly and the local school connects with it.
Dreghorn library is a warm, welcoming place for our young children to meet/play/communicate we meet our community here, young meeting old and vice verca. In this day and age this ia a vital experience for everyone in our community and out with. Our under 5's need this vital space for inclusion in local community. Safe space to explore the amazing toys/space/books, a screen free zone. Communication via books as well as Bookbug and staff. I also feel the older community that meet regually will be left isolated with no where to meet regually. Our beautiful library is a very large part of our lives (mine as well as my childminding families) to even cancer cutting it's hours/day is going to a negative impact on a community that is failing already - You are setting us up for failer.
I use this library 2/3 times a week at least. It is a place where I can go for information use computer or just sit & read. There are no other places like your library to go. It is a hub for the whole community. It also hosts my knitting group twice a week and a place for children to go.
The proposed reduction in hours would negatively impact me, & the wider community in Dreghorn & beyond without a doubt. Since the closure of Springside/ Bourtreehill libraries, Dreghorn serves a large population that would be left without access to library services for potentially 5 days at a time. I currently borrow books regularly & frequently use the printing facilities at the library for work. The locality approach proposed does not reflect how this community & others actually live & access these services - there is an assumption of ability & willingness to travel to Irvine when these services have, can & should be provided in the village. Local groups who use the library will be affected & the proposed opening on alternate weekends will be confusing for older & more vulnerable users who will be discouraged from attending. To be cynical, this proposal appears an attempt to reduce use at libraries that NAC previously planned to close, to provide evidence to do so in the future.
