Summary

Largs Museum has a wonderful collection of Art, Artifacts, Photographs and Postcards, many of which are over 100 years old.    It is important that these collections be digitized so they can be made readily available to the local community without placing any undue stress on the originals many of which are fragile.  All of the musuem's collections relate to our local heritage such as artifacts, events, people and places.

As an independent museum run by volunteers we are funded mainly by donations from visitors to the museum.

Description

Our postcard collection was digitised last winter using private facilities. The remaining collections should be digitised inhouse.   This will be an opporunity for our current and new members/volunteers to come together over the winter months while the museum is closed to the general public.   This project will be a major contribution to ensuring that our heritage is safely recorded for future generations. To make this possible we would kindly ask for funding towards:

Viisan S21 A2 Overhead Scanner £335 Epson FastFoto FF-680W Scanner £440 Brother MFC-J5345DW Scanner/copier £160 Toshiba 2TB Canvio Basics Portable External Hard Drive £50

Location: The Largs Museum is run by volunteers and is here to help local individuals and community organisations learn more about their rich heritage. We provide tours and conduct informal talks in the Museum to local groups of all ages and abilities. As an independent museum we are funded mainly by donations from visitors to the museum.

Digitisation of the resources would make them much more accessible for the museum. The equipment to make this possible would benefit the whole community.

Museum volunteers told me that they have thousands of old photos and dozens of paintings that haven't seen the light of day for a really long time.
Recording these on computer so they can be shared with the local community sounds VERY worthwhile to me!

A brilliant proposed project. If we can't preserve our history digitally, we'll lose it.

This sounds like a really essential project and I'd be happy to help get it done.

Digitising the items that have been stored away for years will give them a new platform to be viewed on. This can only be of benefit to the public.

My family have lived in Largs for centuries so for me this is such an exciting and important project. The digitisation of their collections won’t only open up the History of Largs and North Ayrshire to people from afar but will contribute widely to the local community also.

A really important project that will both help preserve the archives and make them more accessible to all.
