Summary

Building a safe community for one means a safe community for all. We want to celebrate diversity by standing together in a fun, inclusive, family-friendly Pride event that welcomes and celebrates all.

Description

In recent years, there has been a notable increase in hate speech and divisiveness, making the world feel scary and isolating for many, including for LGBTQ+ people. This is especially the case for young people who may be less able to travel to Glasgow or beyond to access events and community – we need to build this right here, where we live.

Millport Pride was established this year to promote diversity, equality, inclusion and the freedom to be yourself while celebrating the LGBTQ+ community, allies, and visitors. Visibility matters, and this is a wonderful opportunity to stand against LGBTQ+ discrimination and bring people together for a fun, family friendly event that reflects the spirit of our island.

We are seeking funds to run a Pride event in 2027, building on the Isle of Cumbrae’s 1st ever Pride event scheduled for 12th September 2026. Our Pride events will bring together community organisations, a public parade, stallholders and family-friendly activities to celebrate local identity, while fostering cohesion and a shared sense of place.

Our request for Participatory Budgeting funds covers purchase of safety equipment, and licensing/insurance costs. For this year’s event we have borrowed equipment outwith the island, but we would like to purchase our own equipment to guarantee their availability next year and ensure we run a safe public event. In 2027, we would also like to grow our offering by hosting live entertainment to provide a better event for the enjoyment of the community, and provide a more enticing offer for visitors, which can have direct economic impacts for businesses across the Island.

Breakdown of project costs:

  • 10 x hi vis vests £40
  • 1 x First aid rucksack (British Standard Compliant) £100
  • 4 Waterproof long range radios = £115
  • Public Entertainment Licence - temporary £393
  • Public liability insurance £340

Total = £988

We’re looking forward to welcoming friends old and new to Cumbrae for a fantastic weekend of pride, celebration and community.

      This is fantastic, Pride 2026 was such an inclusive and wholesome environment, really highlighted that our Island is safe and welcoming space! It was great to see all the businesses celebrating and benefiting from the day too. Excited to see the team working hard in making next year a safe and enjoyable event again

        This is an excellent proposal to showcase our Island as the most accessible and inclusive in the West Coast. Pride 2026 was a family-friendly inclusive event that made the community stronger and more united in the face of division, and it was very beneficial for the businesses in Millport. Glad to see the team is going for it again.
