Breaking Down Barriers to Aikijutsu for Garnock Valley Children
Summary
Purchase a stock of children's Aikijutsu equipment — suits (gi) in a range of sizes, boxing gloves, and bokken (wooden practice swords) — to loan or gift to children whose families can't afford to buy their own kit. This removes the upfront cost barrier stopping some local children from joining or staying in the class.
Description
The project is aimed at encouraging more young people to take up the martial art without the worry of the costs associated with the upfront costs.
* Aikijutsu is a non-aggressive martial art. Young people learn to resolve conflict safely - the technique only begins when someone else "breaks the rules" - rather than being taught to instigate confrontation. It is value- based activity, not one built around punching and kicking for its own sake
*It gives children structured, supervised physical exercise that supports health development.
*It builds geniune calmness and focus that carries over into school, homework, and other activities - not bottled-up emotion, but a skill young people can call on when they need it
*Progressing through the grades and mastering new techniques builds young people's confidence and self-esteem, while regular practice supports positive mental wellbeing
*The class is also.a social space: young people make new friends and build a sense of belonging within the club, alongside the physical and mental benefits
*With the cost of living pressures affecting family budgets in the Garnock Valley, equipment costs increasingly shut young people out of activities like this. A shared kit bank means cost alone will not be the reason the young person misses out.
