Summary

Low-cost, inclusive practical workshops helping local people build skills, confidence and connections in a safe, supportive environment while reducing financial barriers and promoting positive wellbeing.

Description

The Social Garage Project wants to deliver more low-cost, inclusive practical workshops for people in our local community, helping to reduce financial barriers, improve inclusion and provide opportunities that support confidence, connection and positive wellbeing.

We are applying for £1,000 to help us increase the number of workshops we can deliver safely and make them accessible to as many local people as possible.

Our workshops use practical automotive and hands-on activities to engage people in a welcoming, supportive and non-judgemental environment. Activities can include basic vehicle maintenance, understanding vehicle components, safe use of tools, basic checks, problem-solving and practical demonstrations.

A key focus of the project is helping to address the impact of poverty and financial hardship. The cost of activities, courses and opportunities can prevent people from participating, particularly those already facing financial pressures. By keeping our workshops low-cost, we can reduce this barrier and make practical learning and community activities more accessible.

Inclusivity is central to The Social Garage. We want people from different backgrounds, ages, abilities and circumstances to feel welcome and able to participate. Workshops can be adapted where possible to meet individual needs, allowing people to learn at their own pace and contribute in ways that suit them.

The project will also support positive mental health and wellbeing. The workshops provide a safe and welcoming environment where people can get involved in practical activities, meet others, build relationships and experience a sense of achievement. For some participants, having a regular opportunity to get out, socialise and learn something new can help reduce isolation and improve confidence and wellbeing.

The practical nature of the workshops also provides opportunities to develop communication, teamwork, concentration, problem-solving and practical skills. Participants may also discover new interests and gain confidence that could support future volunteering, learning or employment opportunities.

Funding will be used to help us deliver additional workshops safely:

• Workshop safety equipment and PPE – £250 • Workshop consumables and materials – £300 • Practical equipment and resources for workshop activities – £300 • Educational, inclusion and safety materials – £100 • Additional resources to support accessible workshops – £50

Total requested: £1,000

The funding will directly support the delivery of additional low-cost community workshops. It will help us reach more people, reduce financial barriers to participation and ensure that activities can be delivered safely and inclusively.

Our aim is to create a welcoming community environment where people feel valued and able to take part regardless of their financial circumstances, background, age or previous experience. Participants will have the opportunity to develop practical skills, confidence and positive relationships while taking part in activities that support community connection and wellbeing.
