Kilwinning Community Shed
Summary
KCS was established in 2024 but had no permanent home and through a successful asset transfer we now do. It is a community shed with both men and women members for a place where people can meet to have a chat or work on a project that is for the community. This will help members to learn new skills and work on various projects that they would not be able to do on their own. This will help with their mental health and make them feel less isolated as they will be working as a team.
Description
The commuinity shed is awaiting the finalisation of the assest transfer so that we have a permanent building.
The Shed currently has 107 members and due to the shed having to move more than once the men and women have been separated. The women managed to have a space in the Kilwinning library since we lost the building on the main street of Kilwinning in November 2025 and they meet every Wednesday. Their numbers are steadily growing. However, the men have not been so fortunate and have been homeless since then and unable to do the work on the projects e.g. buddy benches for a local school along with a chalkboard and post box. This has not helped with their mental health or feeling of isolation and loneliness. Once in a permanent home their mental health and sense of isolation will dissipate and the members will have a sense of purpose, and provide support for each other where friendships will flourish.
The community was set up so that it would help people socialise with others and work on new projects working where necessary as a team. These activities may include woodworking, gardening, art, computing or craft related projects. There will be a collaborative working environment for example where the men will create a piece of wood and the women will then enhance it with decoration where necessary to finish it off. The men and women will also work on other projects, e.g. the women will learn new skills crafting, making cards or sewing etc. The men will mostly do woodworking, but it is hoped that where men want to work on some craft they can do and vice versa the women can be shown how to do some woodwork items. We also hope to let the group learn how to use IT equipment.
It is a member led multi generational organisation aiming to provide whatever tools we can in order to help maintain community spirit, overcome social isolation and improve the health and wellbeing of the members. Some of our members have retired and it is hoped that the group will help them still be a part of the community.
We would like to apply for funding to support our group so we can make more items for the community and the crafting side of the shed.
The resources we would like to buy are:
Wood for the buddy benches for other schools £500
Model making kits £150
Hire of minibus to visit other sheds £250
Wool and accessories for knitting and crocheting £100
Total £1,000
