Growing All Year: West Kilbride Children's Garden
Summary
Help us grow a year-round community garden where children, families & volunteers can plant, learn & care for nature – creating a greener, more biodiverse West Kilbride.
Description
Ladybird Designs CIC is seeking £1,000 to develop the Children’s Garden in West Kilbride into a thriving, year-round living ecosystem, creating opportunities for children, families & volunteers to learn & care for their local environment.
A previously waterlogged & unusable area has been transformed into an accessible green space where children can grow food & flowers, learn practical gardening skills discovering how plants, soil, insects & wildlife are connected. Around 300 local children benefit from the garden, alongside parents, carers & community volunteers.
Our aim is to ensure the garden does not simply peak in summer and disappear through winter. Through seasonal & succession planting, we will create a garden where something is growing, flowering, providing food or shelter, or changing with the seasons throughout the year.
Funding will support seasonal plants, seeds & bulbs, including spring bulbs such as snowdrops and perennial tulips, food crops & pollinator-friendly plants. It will also provide compost & soil improvers, adult & child-friendly gardening tools, garden labels & educational materials.
The resources will support gardening club sessions, community planting activities & volunteer gardening days. Children & adults will learn about seed sowing, planting, composting, harvesting, biodiversity, pollinators, seasonal change & caring for the soil.
The garden is accessible to parents & carers around drop-off & collection times, including when children attend after-school clubs, plus community gardening activities provide opportunities to take part beyond the school day.
Budget: • Seasonal plants, seeds & bulbs – £350 • Compost, soil improvers & planting materials – £250 • Adult & child-friendly gardening tools – £300 • Garden labels & educational materials – £100
Total requested: £1,000
This funding will help establish the garden as a lasting community resource giving practical opportunities for a greener, more biodiverse West Kilbride.
