Irvine RFC Diversionary Rugby Programme
Summary
A free, weekly diversionary rugby programme providing safe, structured activity for young people, reducing antisocial behaviour through sport, transport support, and accessible pitch‑side equipment.
Description
Following review process, application will proceed for eligible cost of pitch equipment only (£400); fuel costs are ineligible under criteria for the fund.
This project will deliver a weekly Diversionary Rugby session for young people across Irvine and surrounding areas. The aim is to provide a safe, positive alternative to antisocial behaviour, giving young people structured physical activity, supportive role models, and a welcoming environment.
Many young people in our community face barriers such as lack of transport, cost, and limited access to organised activities. To remove these barriers, the programme will be free, open to all P7–S6 participants, and supported by volunteer coaches.
Transport is a key factor in participation. Funding will allow us to provide minibus hire and fuel support, ensuring young people from disadvantaged or transport‑poor areas can attend regularly. This helps create equal access and prevents exclusion based on geography or household circumstances.
To run safe, engaging sessions, we require essential pitch equipment including cones, bibs, balls, tackle pads, and portable lighting. These items allow us to deliver structured, high‑quality sessions that are easy to join, enjoyable, and suitable for a wide range of abilities.
The programme will promote physical wellbeing, social connection, confidence, and positive behaviour — helping young people build routine, resilience, and a sense of belonging within their community.
