Beyond Caring: A Two-Stage Support Pathway for Unpaid Carers

Caring Through Loss is a structured support programme designed to help unpaid carers navigate the emotional, practical and social challenges associated with end-of-life caring and bereavement. The project recognises that grief often begins long before a loved one dies. Carers supporting someone with a life-limiting illness frequently experience anticipatory grief, anxiety, uncertainty and emotional exhaustion while continuing to manage significant caring responsibilities. Following bereavement, many face a further period of adjustment as they adapt to the loss of their loved one, their caring role, daily routine, sense of purpose and social connections.

The project aims to provide timely, compassionate support that reflects the changing needs of carers throughout this journey. Through a two-stage pathway, carers will be supported to prepare for future loss, develop coping strategies, strengthen resilience and access meaningful support both before and after bereavement.

Identified Need

Unpaid carers often place their own wellbeing behind the needs of the person they support. While practical and clinical services may be available for those receiving care, carers themselves can struggle to access support focused on their emotional wellbeing. Anticipatory grief can impact mental health, confidence and resilience long before bereavement occurs.

Following a loss, carers frequently report loneliness, social isolation, anxiety and a loss of identity as they adjust to life beyond caring. Many feel disconnected from their communities and uncertain about where to turn for support. This project addresses a recognised gap by supporting carers throughout the full bereavement journey rather than only after a death has occurred.

Project Delivery

Stage One: Preparing for Tomorrow

This stage supports carers caring for someone with a life-limiting illness or approaching end of life.

Participants will explore anticipatory grief, emotional wellbeing and practical preparation for future changes through facilitated workshops and peer support sessions. Key topics will include self-care, resilience, coping with uncertainty, difficult conversations, palliative care awareness, practical planning and accessing local support.

The aim is to increase carers' confidence, reduce feelings of anxiety and isolation, and help them develop strategies to protect their own wellbeing while continuing in their caring role.

Stage Two: Living Beyond Loss

This stage supports carers following bereavement as they adapt to life after caring.

Through a mixture of peer support, guided discussion and creative activities, participants will be encouraged to remember their loved one while rebuilding confidence and developing positive ways to move forward. Activities will include memory box creation, Playlist for Life sessions, remembrance activities, mindfulness and wellbeing exercises, reflective workshops and opportunities to reconnect with community life.

The memory box element will run throughout the programme, allowing participants to build a personal collection of memories, reflections and meaningful items over time.

Outcomes

Participants will:

  • Increase their understanding of grief, anticipatory grief and bereavement.
  • Improve emotional wellbeing and resilience.
  • Develop practical coping and self-care strategies.
  • Build supportive peer relationships.
  • Reduce loneliness and social isolation.
  • Feel better prepared for future change and loss.
  • Increase confidence in accessing support services.
  • Strengthen community connections.
  • Develop a renewed sense of purpose and identity beyond caring.

Long-Term Impact

By supporting carers both before and after bereavement, Caring Through Loss will provide a consistent pathway that promotes emotional wellbeing, resilience and social connectedness. Participants will leave with stronger support networks, practical tools for managing grief and increased confidence to navigate future challenges. The project will reduce isolation, improve wellbeing and help carers remain connected to their communities during a significant period of transition.

Sustainability and Ongoing Support

Participants will be linked into existing Carers Gateway services, peer networks, wellbeing programmes and community opportunities to ensure support continues beyond the funded project. Where appropriate, carers will receive additional one-to-one support, information and signposting to relevant local services.

    • What an excellent idea, just what is needed in the area! It is something that will happen to all of us at some point. Knowing that there could be extra help and support through difficult times would be comforting.
