Project Description

Since starting, Ayrshire Coast Rollers has grown from a small local idea into an established and growing community, with over 2,000 followers on social media and regular meet-ups attracting people from across North Ayrshire and beyond. The response we've received shows there is a genuine demand for accessible, social and active opportunities within our community.

Ayrshire Coast Rollers is a friendly, inclusive community skating group bringing people of all ages and abilities together to get active, meet new people and enjoy the outdoors. Our home is mainly North Ayrshire, particularly along the coast, although we occasionally skate in other local areas to make the group as accessible and inclusive as possible. What started as a few people wanting to get out on their skates has grown into a really positive community. Our meet-ups give people a reason to leave the house, get off their screens and spend time outdoors, while enjoying some exercise and the beautiful Ayrshire coast. For many people, it is also about much more than skating. It provides an opportunity to make friends, build confidence, feel part of something and reduce social isolation. Everyone is encouraged to come along regardless of their skating ability, and our meet-ups are relaxed, supportive and non-judgemental. As winter approaches, we want to keep this community going. The group has become something that people genuinely look forward to, and we don't want colder, darker weather to mean that people lose that connection. Funding would help us continue running free community meet-ups throughout the winter and allow us to make them enjoyable, safe and welcoming even when outdoor skating becomes more challenging. We already have public liability insurance in place and are committed to running the group responsibly and safely. We are also keen to develop the group further by supporting our volunteers and investing in equipment that will allow us to organise more activities and themed community events.

The impact the group is having can be seen in the feedback we receive from our members: “It has given me a kick to get out more and personally it makes my mental mood better... finding this group seems to be helping me and puts a big smile on my face. It can also help with people that may be feeling isolated/lonely to be a part of something.” Another member told us: “Definitely found a welcoming community and made some new friends.” We have also seen the positive impact on younger members and their families. One parent told us: “My 10yr old daughter loves the skate meet ups. I've seen her confidence grow, her identity develop and her interest in skating increase... all of which support her physical and mental health and wellbeing.” These comments reflect what we see at our meet-ups, people encouraging each other, making new friendships, becoming more confident and finding a positive reason to get outdoors and be active. The funding would contribute towards: Volunteer marshal/high-visibility bibs – approximately £100 Cones and route/safety equipment – approximately £100 Themed and seasonal community skate events – approximately £300 Additional skating/event equipment and resources – approximately £200 Winter activities and costs associated with keeping the group running – approximately £300

Total project cost: £1,000 The exact costs may vary depending on supplier prices and what equipment is needed most, but every penny would be used to support the running and development of the group. Most importantly, we want to keep Ayrshire Coast Rollers free to attend. We don't want cost to be a barrier to anyone getting involved. Funding would allow us to continue providing a safe, inclusive and welcoming community without passing costs onto the people who come along. We believe this project deserves to be funded because it is a simple idea that has already created a genuine and growing impact. We are getting people active, outdoors and connected with their community, while creating friendships and reducing isolation. With a little financial support, we can build on what we have created and make sure the community continues to grow and thrive throughout the year.
