Summary

Dementia Friendly Largs and District wants to bring the Virtual Dementia Bus experience to Largs , by allowing participants to “walk in the shoes” of someone living with dementia, the project will build greater empathy, patience and confidence among those among those who support vulnerable people in the community. A vote for this project is a vote for kindness, dignity and better understanding for people living with dementia and the families who care for them.

Description

Dementia Friendly Largs is applying for £1000 to help bring the Virtual Dementia experience to our local community. This immersive training experience is designed to give people with a healthy brain a powerful insight into what dementia may feel like, helping them better understand the challenges faced by people living with dementia every day.

The Virtual Dementia Experience is widely described as a scientifically and medically proven method of helping people understand dementia by temporarily altering sensory perception asking participants to carry out everyday tasks. By experiencing changes to sight, hearing, touch, mobility and concentration, participants can appreciate how sensory changes can affect communication, behaviour, confidence and daily life.

This is a greatly worthwhile project because it goes beyond traditional awareness training. Instead of simply telling people about dementia, it allows them to experience some of the confusion, frustration and difficulty that a person with dementia may face. This can build empathy, patience and understanding, encouraging people to communicate more clearly, respond more compassionately and make small practical changes that can improve someone's quality of life.

The Quote for 2027 is  £1180 +vat and Hall hire  @ £40 , DFL will cover the shortfall of the hire of the bus = £180 + vat for the total = £236 + hire of the hall @ £40 , therefore DFL's contribution will be £456 if we are sucessful in securing £1000 from the Participatory Budget.

This is a one off day event for the year 2027.
