Summary

Cycling Without Age Scotland (CWAS) is a charity that provides FREE, inclusive outings for people who are elderly, isolated or have mobility difficulties. Our volunteer pilots take passengers out on a specially adapted trishaw, allowing them to enjoy fresh air, beautiful surroundings and meaningful social interaction that they may otherwise be unable to access. Our Largs Chapter provides outings along the Largs Promenade, lasting between 20 and 90 minutes.

Description

Following review process, application will proceed for eligible cost of printing (£217); other costs are ineligible under the fund's criteria

What We Provide

Our trishaw is powered by a trained volunteer pilot, with battery assistance to make the cycling accessible and sustainable. It carries a passenger and, where appropriate, a carer or family member.

The outings provide much more than a cycle ride. Passengers experience the fresh sea air, beautiful coastal scenery and changing activity along the promenade. They can chat with their pilot, carers, relatives and people they meet along the way. For individuals who spend much of their time indoors, these simple experiences can have a profound effect on their well-being.

The opportunity to see familiar places, encounter other people and engage with the local community provides valuable sensory stimulation, companionship and a sense of connection.  For people living with memory impairment, the immediate enjoyment of the experience can be particularly meaningful, often leaving them with a noticeable sense of happiness and elation.

Benefits to Passengers

Our service helps tackle loneliness, isolation and reduced access to the outdoors among older people and those with limited mobility. For some passengers, a CWAS outing becomes the highlight of their week — something they can look forward to and talk about afterwards.

The combination of fresh air, gentle movement, unrestricted views, conversation and interaction with the wider community provides benefits to both physical and emotional wellbeing. Passengers are able to enjoy the local coastline and participate in community life in a way that would otherwise be difficult or impossible.

Our service can also support people of all ages experiencing disability or mental health challenges. By making the promenade and local community more accessible, the trishaw helps people feel included rather than isolated.

Benefits to Volunteers

Our volunteer pilots are at the heart of the service. Once trained and qualified, they have the opportunity to make a direct and meaningful difference to people's lives within their own community.

Volunteers develop friendships with passengers, carers and fellow volunteers, while hearing stories and experiences that deepen their connection to the local area. They also benefit personally from being active outdoors, developing communication and social skills, and being part of a supportive and rewarding community initiative.

Our volunteers consistently tell us that the experience is hugely rewarding. The opportunity to bring joy, companionship and freedom to someone who may otherwise spend much of their time indoors provides a strong sense of purpose.

Wider Community Impact

The CWAS trishaw provides a sustainable and inclusive form of recreation, enabling people with mobility difficulties to enjoy Largs' fantastic coastal scenery and participate in community life.

The service also has the potential to make local events more inclusive and accessible by enabling people who might otherwise be unable to attend or participate to be involved.

Ultimately, Cycling Without Age is about much more than cycling. It is about connecting people, reducing isolation and giving everyone the opportunity to feel the wind in their hair and be part of their community.

Through our volunteer-led jaunts, we help people rediscover familiar places, make new connections and experience moments of freedom, dignity and happiness that can have a lasting impact on their wellbeing.
