Reading Rangers
Summary
Reading Rangers is an outdoor literacy and wellbeing project designed to encourage reading for pleasure through creative and engaging outdoor learning experiences. The project will transform outdoor spaces into interactive literacy environments where pupils can read, listen to stories, create storytelling content, and engage with nature-based learning.
Description
In the short term, the project will increase pupil engagement in reading and outdoor learning activities. Pupils will have access to new books, storytelling resources, and outdoor literacy experiences that encourage participation, creativity, and collaboration.
The project is expected to involve approximately 320 pupils across Primary 1–Primary 7, with family engagement opportunities available to parents and carers through woodland reading sessions and home use of story sacks.
Tangible outputs will include:
Waterproof story sacks
New nature-themed library resources
Outdoor reading areas
Interactive story trail materials
QR code storytelling displays
Pupil-created story maps and recordings
Family reading events
Medium-term outcomes are expected to include:
Increased reading for pleasure
Improved confidence in reading, writing, listening, and talking
Improved learner wellbeing and engagement
Increased family participation in literacy activities
Greater pupil ownership of literacy experiences
Improved collaboration and communication skills
Enhanced digital literacy skills
The project will also provide inclusive opportunities for pupils with additional support needs by offering multi-sensory, active, and creative literacy experiences in supportive outdoor environments.
Pupils will develop transferable skills including creativity, teamwork, resilience, communication, and problem-solving. The project will also encourage environmental awareness and positive connections with outdoor spaces.
By embedding literacy within outdoor learning contexts, the project aims to create positive associations with reading and support long-term literacy engagement.
The project will support families outside of school to engage in reading and using our open green spaces whilst enjoying and learning to read.
The £1000 will be used for part of this project to fund books and reading resources at £1000.
