Description

One Team, Five Communities: New Kit for Largs Colts 2016

Largs Colts 2016 is seeking £1,000 from Community Participatory Budgeting towards the cost of providing a new football kit for 30 young players from communities across North Ayrshire.

Our team brings together children from Largs, Skelmorlie, Fairlie, West Kilbride and Ardrossan. Although we play as Largs Colts, we are a team made up of young people and families from across the wider North Ayrshire community.

The total cost of providing the new kit is £1,764. Community PB funding would contribute £1,000, with the team raising and contributing the remaining £764.

Project costs:

30 complete playing kits, consisting of a playing top, shorts and socks: £1,764

Community PB funding requested: £1,000

Contribution from Largs Colts 2016 team funds and fundraising: £764

Total project value: £1,764

The funding represents £33.33 of Community PB investment for each of the 30 young players, with the team meeting the remaining cost.

Providing the kit collectively means every player takes to the pitch wearing the same kit, regardless of their family’s financial circumstances. It avoids placing the full cost of new playing kit directly onto individual families and helps us keep participation in grassroots football as affordable as possible.

The benefit goes beyond providing clothing.

Grassroots football gives children regular opportunities to be physically active, develop friendships and learn teamwork, communication, discipline and responsibility. Being part of a team also gives young people a sense of belonging and connection with other children from their own and neighbouring communities.

Our team demonstrates this community connection particularly well. Thirty young players from five North Ayrshire communities train, play and develop together. Their families also come together through training, matches and team activities, building relationships between communities.

The project fits strongly with the Community Action theme. It supports young people to remain physically active, helps reduce a financial barrier associated with participation and brings children and families together through grassroots sport.

The £1,000 PB award would not meet the entire cost of the project. Largs Colts 2016 will contribute the remaining £764, meaning the community investment will be matched by a substantial contribution from the team.

The result will be simple and visible. Thirty local children will receive a complete playing kit consisting of a top, shorts and socks, allowing them to represent their team and communities together.

For every £33.33 invested by Community PB, one young player will receive support towards a complete team kit.

This project will help ensure grassroots football remains a place where children from different communities and different circumstances participate together as equals.
