Kilbirnie and Glengarnock Age Concern

2025-08-25  •  No comments  •  Elizabeth Johnstone  •  Garnock Valley

Members state that the excursions we provide are an important part of the group as they feel inc!uded in an activity which they would not be able to participate in otherwise. We would be unable to provide this without funding such as the locality PB. We have been fortunate enough to receive this previously and provided a fantastic days out  to Cumnock Factory Outlet and a meal at Romeo and Ju!iets.

We would like to apply for funding to provide another 2 trips next year which will be chosen by the members of the grouo. We therefore require £1000  which will cover the approximate cost of the bus at £500 and approximate cost of the meal at £500

Our committee aim to provide either two small trips or one trip and a meal out.

These excursions encourage our elderly people to enjoy company and reduce social isolation and improve their general wellbeing.

Dirrans Gardening group

The volunteers work tirelessly each week to keep on top of weeds, plant growth, grass, and pruning. This can feel like an endless task, but the motivation of our volunteers never wavers. Every volunteer has previously used the service themselves, and they are passionate about giving something back to the community that once supported them.

Our vision is to make the garden a welcoming, calming space that others can enjoy — a true extension of the outdoors where people can experience the physical and mental benefits of being surrounded by nature.

To help combat the ongoing issue of weeds, we have recently started using membrane and stones. However, over time these materials degrade and need to be replaced. This year, we hope to refresh the garden’s weed prevention measures to make the space easier to maintain and allow our volunteers to focus more on planting and enhancing the garden’s visual appeal rather than the constant battle with weeds.

Funding requirements:

  • Garden stones: We require approximately 4 tonnes of stones at a cost of £157.01 per tonne.
  • Tree loppers: We need to upgrade our tree loppers (x1) at a cost of £33.36.
  • Amount left over will be spent on the following:
  • Perennials: Introducing more perennial plants will reduce long-term costs while maintaining a vibrant, colourful garden that encourages bees and insects. Costs range between £5–£20 per plant.
  • Fruit & vegetable area: This year, we successfully grew strawberries, potatoes, and cooking apples. We would love to expand this area further, as it supports our cooking groups and allows us to use fresh produce grown onsite. For example, a plum tree costs £39.99.

Our team also builds wooden planters on-site, allowing us to expand our planting efforts in a sustainable way.

The garden plays an important role in accessibility for people who use our service, some of whom have limited or no access to a private garden. We provide raised beds and a measured walking loop, which is used for mindful walking and physiotherapy practice. These measured laps help service users gradually increase their walking distance, build confidence, and track their progress.

The sensory element of the garden — including herbs, lavender, and other fragrant plants — creates a therapeutic environment, providing additional mental health benefits.

With funding support, our volunteers will be able to focus more on developing the planting and visual beauty of the garden rather than spending most of their time fighting weeds. This will create a lasting, positive impact for everyone who uses and enjoys this special space

Dementia Befriending and Wellbeing cafes

2025-09-15  •  No comments  •  Ayrshire Independent Living Network  •  Three Towns

The Dementia Project provides one-to-one befriending for people living with dementia, offering companionship at home and support to access their local community. It also gives unpaid carers vital respite through our carers’ peer support.

In addition, our Dementia Wellbeing Cafes in Saltcoats and Irvine provide a welcoming space where people with dementia and their loved ones/unpaid carer can come together to enjoy social activities, entertainment, chair yoga, or simply connect over a game of pool, a cuppa, and a chat. The cafes play a key role in tackling social isolation while supporting positive mental health and wellbeing.

Both the befriending service and the cafés are free, ensuring that cost is never a barrier to anyone attending. A dedicated volunteer fundraising committee organises events to raise funds for days out for people living with dementia, their unpaid carers, and volunteers.

Any funding received would help us keep the cafés free and support the delivery of activities, themed events, and entertainment, ensuring they remain a fun and inclusive spaces for all.

Skelmorlie Active Travel

2025-09-10  •  No comments  •  Secret Bunker  •  North Coast and Cumbraes

We are normally open on Sunday afternoons from April to September from approx 1pm until 5pm.

Our Museum site known as Skelmorlie Secret Bunker as a secondary role has a vision of promoting Active Travel within North Ayrshire for the benefit of all our community.

We can provide a toilet and refreshment facility through using our self contained Groundhog Welfare unit which provides a proper toilet facility and small kitchen for the provision of hot and cold drinks.

In addition apart from catering for small groups such as individuals and families we can by prior arrangement cope with organised walking and cycling groups both on Sunday afternoons and outwith those times.

We are applying for £360 to get our toilet facility serviced over that six months, £150 for flyers to advertise within North Ayrshire the Active Travel Waypoint and £130 for kitchen sundries such as water, tea, coffee eco cups and milk to provide a refreshment service all at no cost to the users of our museum site.

Friends of Trindlemoss

2025-09-03  •  No comments  •  Broomlands and Bourtreehill Community Association  •  Official position 1  •  Irvine

Trindlemoss Day Opportunities is based in Irvine the people with learning disabilities, physical impairments and sensory  who attend come from all over North Ayrshire. Trindlemoss aims to transform community attitudes to better support and promote opportunities for people with learning disabilities. We help people with learning disabilities share their strengths and skills with the community and encourage recognition for their input.

Throughout our work , we stay focused on our service users, and the relationships that we build with them the supports we offer them and enrich them at Trindlemoss we try to support encourage each individual to reach their full potential.

After receiving PB funding last year Friends of Trindlemoss has organised social events at night which have been well attended by over sixty peopl and the building has been used at night.

Parents, carers, and support workers from other organisations  have attended and the people with learning disabilities have had the opportunity to meet up with their friends and socialise at night some of the people attending have not seen each other since school.

We have also had social evenings fortnightly to bring carers and support staff together. At the monthly social events parents have met other parents and this has also helped new parents with the transitions from school to day opportunities. Parents have also been given the opportunity to meet up with other parents they have not seen from Lockheart school.

Trindle moss Court and Trindlemoss House also have residents that have benefited from the social events has it has also given them the opportunity to meet their neighbours.

The criteria we meet is health and wellbeing as Friends of Trindlemoss promote physical and mental wellbeing the project tackles social isolation and it brings the Trindlemoss Community together as well as bringing the wider community into Day opportunities. The people who reside in the tenancies have mental health issues and learning disabilities so we also hit the criteria for building community spirits as we have had the social event in an environment that is familiar to everyone.

Friends of Trindlemoss would like to hold a big social event in Castlepark community centre, the group would like a bar and band and would like to open the event up to more people with learning disabilities who live in the community they also would like a buffet as at all our social events we always have a food.

This will be a challenge for some of our service users as we would like the event to run from 7pm to 11pm and it is trying a new environment but some people with learning disabilities know Castlepark community centre and attend clubs there already and volunteer at their lunch club, community garden , community cafe and the dementia cafe every week.

We are also working on a newletter to tell more people about our events and if all goes well we will publish this twice a year this in turn will be sent to the community learning disability team and other third party organisations that support people with learning disabilities in the community.

St Winin’s Over 60s Club

2025-09-07  •  No comments  •  Anne Marie McMillan  •  Kilwinning

We are applying for funding to enable our over 60's club to hold a Burns Supper and an afternoon tea.  These events would provide a beacon of light in the dark winter months when social isolation and the cost-of-living crisis have an even greater impact on people's health and wellbeing.  These events would bring the club together with celebration and fun.  With this funding we would be able to organise food and entertainment for each event, this would make them special for all group members to enjoy.   Our club plays a vital role in combatting loneliness and encourages members to come along weekly to connect with others and share enjoyable experiences.  The club means so much to its members and has a real impact on people's lives in a positive way.
