Summary
The Vennel Friends Discovery Group meet weekly in the Vennel Gardens and helps older people come together to meet new people and try a whole host of activities while working towards a recognised award. Our group is open to anyone over the age of 50. We participate in a wide range of activities that promote the health and wellbeing of our group members. The group provides a safe and welcoming place for older people to connect socially which helps to combat loneliness and isolation.
Description
We are applying for funding to enable our group members to plan and experience a trip to the theatre and afternoon lunch up in Glasgow in the new year.
Social activities such as this can have a positive impact of the health and wellbeing of older people. This is especially true in the winter months when the cost of living and social isolation can have a significantly negative impact on people’s lives, especially for older members of the community. This would be an opportunity for our group members to experience a special outing which many would not be able to access independently due challenges faced through physical health and mental wellbeing.

Project complete20 people benefitted from the funding. The PB funding allowed all 20 of our group participants to go along to the Seamill Hydro for two afternoon teas, one in April and another which is planned for September . This allowed the group members to go somewhere new, enjoy a fun sociable outing, sharing good food and company with friends. This helped to improve the mental wellbeing of participants and reduce social isolation and loneliness. The afternoon tea was a huge success and the group had so much fun sharing this experience together. 'I was looking forward to the afternoon tea for ages and it didn't disappoint. I had a good blether and the food was brilliant.' 'It was so nice to get all dressed up and go to a fancy place with my pals. It was a brilliant afternoon'. ' We all felt very special having afternoon tea at the Hydro. The food was beautiful and I felt so happy to be out and about with the group'.
