Project Summary
The Argyle Community Shop runs Wednesdays 11–4, offering Saltcoats residents affordable food and holistic support, with a warm welcome to help households manage the cost of living crisisProject Description
The ongoing cost of living crisis continues to have a significant impact on households, with many struggling to afford food, heating, and other essentials. At Argyle Community Shop, we aim to continue supporting our community by providing a dignified range of foods that help families when they need it
However, with rising prices, we face real challenges in maintaining the same choice and variety of products without additional funding. Access to a diverse range of foods not only meets practical needs but also offers dignity and stability to those we support.
A grant of £1,000 would enable us to purchase food for a three-month period, covering the coldest winter months when household energy bills are at their highest. This equates to £83.33 per week, directly supporting around 65 households. In practice, this works out at just £1.28 per household per week—an affordable yet vital investment that ensures local families continue to access food when they need it most
Location: The Argyle Community Shop is based in Argyle Community Centre in the heart of Saltcoats, (the only community Centre in Saltcoats) Saltcoats is a coastal town in North Ayrshire that has faced long-term challenges linked to unemployment, health inequalities, and poverty, all of which have been heightened by the ongoing cost of living crisis. Many local families and individuals are struggling to balance rising household costs, making access to affordable food and support services increasingly vital. The shop directly serves the Saltcoats community. Its central location ensures it is accessible to households across the town, The space itself is designed to be more than a shop — it offers a warm, welcoming environment where people feel part of their community rather than singled out by hardship. The project impacts the wider community by reducing financial strain, supporting dignity, and offering social connection. By grounding itself in Saltcoats’ unique local context, the Argyle Community Shop addresses immediate needs while also contributing to longer-term community resilience and wellbeing
