We would like to establish a sewing group where people can learn skills for life and hobbies for well-being and fun. There would be no cost except to ask for a donation, if possible, for the food bank in Ardeer Community Centre.
Being part of such a group can encourage self reliance, reduce social isolation and be of benefit to all who participate.
In learning to sew and mend items of clothing, we can reduce waste and promote sustainability, in our community thereby avoiding waste.
In cold weather, we can provide a warm space. All equipment, including sewing machines, will be available for use at the classes, free of charge. Fabric and thread for projects will be provided as well as tea/coffee and biscuits.
Health & Well-being will be enhanced from social inter-action, learning new skills will build confidence and satisfaction will be achieved as we support the production of items for gifts and home use. We will promote reducing waste by encouraging simple mending skills.
By bringing people together to learn at Ardeer Community Centre, we hope to further promote the centre as a hub of our community, encouraging all to engage in learning through fun.
Location: Ardeer has long been an area of social deprivation. There are few opportunities to engage in learning a hobby - and when money is tight, there are none. I have been associated with the area for over twenty five years and I live here too., having previously been HT at the local school. This area was once a tight community and it could be argued that we have lost a little of that in recent years. I would like to try to be a small part of bringing that back by offering a sewing class.
Proposed on behalf of: I have approached a local card making and fabric business, who run their own, weekend sewing get-togethers and they have agreed to lend me their expertise and skills (and in the beginning, their sewing machines), to see if the idea will take off. We decided to call it Come See, Come Sew so that people can just drop in and see if the group is a fit for them.

Project complete10-12 people benefitted from the funding. It meant a great deal to our group -it meant not only a place to learn new skills without charge or worry, tea and coffee and biscuits were provided free of charge, a reduction in social isolation for members, a place for carers to relax and unwind also while learning new skills. It meant access to sewing machines and fabric and equipment. Some of our group have now bought machines of their own as their skills have progressed. We have made quilts, learned patchwork and quilting techniques and made friends - one lady told us that if wasn't for our group, she wouldn't speak to anyone for most of her week. We are very grateful.
A great way of bringing people together. No costs for participants, a lack of financial means should not exclude anyone from social interaction and the acquisition of skills. Carrying the work that has been done in the Three Towns over the last few years.
This is a fantastic opportunity to bring the community together and help to support others to learn a new skill which will help build confidence and alleviate social isolation whilst improving health and wellbeing
