Garnock Valley Discovery Award

2024-09-18  •  No comments  •  gvdiscovery  •  Garnock Valley

We are seeking funding to help our group expand and connect with more people our age who are either hesitant to go out or have lost the confidence to do so. We used to have access to a minibus for our visits, but it's not as readily available now, creating a financial barrier for some potential members.

Many of our group members volunteer across the Valley, from Cafe Solace to Hessilhead Animal Rescue. Their countless hours of volunteering are now being recognized through an award. We also share our crafts and various interests and hobbies. For some, the challenge of baking a scone for the first time in years has sparked a newfound interest in baking, which the rest of the group now enjoys. Walking is the most popular activity, but any form of exercise is encouraged. We even try out activities as a group to see if we can offer them, such as yoga, etc. A significant part of our group enjoys embarking on journeys of discovery to places of interest across the west of Scotland. Our latest visit was to a wonderful charity called the Seagull Trust, which provides trips along the canal at Falkirk and the Falkirk Wheel.

we are asking for

Transport cost (train fairs and minibus hire ) £400

entrance Fees ( £300) for example Hunterson castle is £100 for 10 people)

Catering £150

activity resources (craft supplies etc. £150

Free Food Fridays and Chit Chat Club

2024-09-17  •  No comments  •  Aileen Miller  •  Garnock Valley

Beith Trust is seeking £1,000 to support two vital community projects: Free Food Friday and the Chit Chat Club. Free Food Friday provides essential fresh supermarket food to over 40 Beith residents each week, reducing food waste and preventing good food from going to landfill. Furthermore, fresh vegetables grown by our dedicated volunteer gardeners are also given away through Free Food Friday, providing nutritious, locally grown food to our community. This service offers a lifeline to residents facing food insecurity, helping alleviate the strain on household budgets while fostering a sense of community.

Alongside this, the Chit Chat Club addresses social isolation by bringing together local residents for coffee, cakes, and conversation. The club offers a welcoming, supportive space where individuals can build meaningful connections. Both projects are volunteer-led, with one staff member overseeing their smooth operation. The volunteers not only contribute to the success of these projects but also gain valuable skills, confidence, and a deep sense of fulfilment through their involvement.

The benefits of these projects extend beyond service users, providing volunteers with a rewarding sense of purpose and community engagement, while contributing to the overall well-being of the Beith community. This funding will enable Beith Trust to continue providing vital services that address both food insecurity and social isolation, ensuring that local residents and volunteers alike benefit from a more connected, supported community.

Breakdown of Costs:

  • Christmas Lunch for Service Users (35 people): £300
  • Staff Costs (4 hours per week at £12.00 p/h for 12 weeks): £576
  • Volunteer Gifts: £100
  • Volunteer Travel Expenses: £50
  • Miscellaneous Costs (supplies, refreshments, activities): £76

Total: £1,102

Dalry Community Cinema

2024-09-06  •  No comments  •  Hugh Campbell  •  Garnock Valley

Dalry Community Sports Club was founded in 2007 as a constituted group and has been a registered charity since 2014. Initially, our key aims were to advance public participation in sport in Dalry and the surrounding area by promoting and providing opportunities for a wide range of sporting and leisure activities in an accessible manner to all groups of people, and to improve the fitness and health of the persons for whom the activities are intended. Through these initiatives we have worked to generate an environment to live in which strengthens our community, recreating the levels of inclusion enjoyed by previous generations. Over recent years we have built on this and looked for additional opportunities to help address other key issues within our community, including, social isolation, food deprivation, mental health & wellbeing and cost of living issues.  We are looking to extent some of the benefits we have realised from these initiatives by launching free regular Community Cinema events with complimentary refreshments. We ran a successful trial night in the Community Centre last Christmas and have had a number of requests to repeat this. To help us realise this, we would work in partnership with Dalry Community Centre Association to deliver these free events.

Barrmill and District Community Association provide and organise recreational facilities for the community. We also manage the Barrmill Community Centre for the benefit of the community.

There are many activities organised and run by volunteers including carpet bowling, bingo and chit chat club on a weekly basis. Charity coffee mornings, Christmas Fairy Trails, an annual dog show and teddy bear's picnic have also been added to the range of events offered in recent years. There is also an annual garden competition for gardeners in the area.

Barrmill Conservaiton Group  which works in conjunction with Barrmill and Distriict Community Association provide weekly and monthly workdays to maintain the park

Funding would show gratitude for all the time and effort the volunteers contribute to the assocation.

Kilbirnie and Glengarnock Age Concern

This funding means that we can enjoy two day trips at approximately £500 each. The cost of a coach has risen sharply but any help offsets this.

"Skirt the Skeith" 12k road run

2024-09-13  •  No comments  •  she989y  •  Garnock Valley

Our main aim is to keep our runners safe on the country roads and ensure other road users are aware of runners on the road. For the last three years we have begged and borrowed road signage from Running groups around Ayrshire which is not always feasible if they have their own events on, We would like to purchase our own road signs which can be placed around the route

We require 20 signs which states "runners on road"

We require 4 signs which have arrows on them

Kilbirnie & Glengarnock Community Council

Following the reduction in Streetscene's budget, there are a number of maintenance issues that need to be addressed by the community.  This application will give us a budget to arrange these works in conjunction with other local groups.  A few months ago, the Dalry Community Development Hub organised responsibility for maintaining planters in Dalry with various local groups.  They received funding and were able to purchase plants, both annual and perennial, from Gateside nursery.  We would like to do something similar in Kilbirnie.  Whilst Dalry had only 9 planters to arrange, there are more areas in Kilbirnie needing work:

9x planters in car park beside Salvation Army

5x planters outside old folks houses in Main Street at the Cross

5x planters between BBQ Hut and Easties on Bridge Street

1x flowerbed at foot of the path outside Kilbirnie Library

1x flowerbed at the top of Bank Street / Glasgow Street

As well as these flowerbeds, other works needing done includes weeding along kerbs and property boundaries on pavement side; clearing vegetation from public paths, such as the Cat's Lane
