1. Annually, during January and February Irvine Burns Club invites local primary school Primary 6 pupils (450 in 2024) to Wellwood Burns Centre & Museum to learn about the life of Burns and the pivotal role Irvine played encouraging him to develop as a poet.
2. By entering a “Champion of Champion” event, Primary Schools demonstrate their pupils’ reading and speaking skills, boosting their self-confidence and fostering an appreciation of the Scots language.
Description
To reinforce the annual school visits it is intended to produce a workbook for each pupil take away with them as a reminder of their visit.
In relation to the verse speaking “Champion of Champion” event funding is sought to provide trophies for those pupils nominated to represent their schools and performing their chosen poem.
It is intended that there will be three categories, Primaries 1-2, Primaries 3-4 and Primaries 5-7.
There are 11/12 Primary Schools in the Irvine Area, and it is hoped that all would participate.
Those nominated by their schools are also eligible to compete in the Ayrshire Association of Burns Clubs Schools’ Competition held later in the year.
We seek funding towards the printing costs of the workbooks (£500) and the purchase of 36 trophies at a cost of £20 each (£720) a total of £1220.
Location: Wellwood primarily serves the communities of Irvine New Town Area. However, we reach out to the wider areas of North Ayrshire and beyond.
Proposed on behalf of: Irvine Burns Club has an unbroken history since it was founded in 1826. In promoting the works of Burns and his significant links with Irvine we host an annual verse speaking event for primary school pupils. In partnership with NAC and other organisations we developed several initiatives in the town including the Herbour Dauner
