The children and parents would like to develop an area in front of the school for the whole community to work together to create a seated area, a butterfly/ bee garden and flower planters to encourage families and the wider community to use the space to socialise across the generations and appreciate nature.
Amount requested: £1,000
2 recycled picnic benches - £400 each = £800 Gardening equipment eg. spades, forks, buckets and gloves- £100 Seeds and bedding plants £100
Location: Isle of Cumbrae
Proposed on behalf of: The Cumbrae Primary building is a focal point of the community and is one of great interest historically as it dates back to 1876. It is in a fortunate position receiving sun most of the day and with a beautiful outlook. We would like to encourage the community to work with the children to develop the front of the school in to an area that everyone can use to spend more time outside, mix with one another to improve wellbeing and appreciate each other as well as nature. A community gardening group would be established so that the ground/ planters can be prepared and flowers planted. Children will learn life skills from the more experienced gardeners and they will also create noticeboards with facts about the plants and flowers. It is of prime importance on Cumbrae that children work intergenerationally as 40% of our island is over 65 and many experience lonliness which we are trying to minimise. We will start the group just after Easter and will choose plants which will offer the area and insects all year round colour and habitats.
