Location: Abbey Tower

Proposed on behalf of: Our application has 2 distinct elements that we plan to develop in 2023. (a) children’s activity packs and (b) an archive project (a)The Abbey Tower Heritage Centre is open from mid-May to mid-September and at other pre-arranged times. Many of our visitors are families, schools, youth groups and other organised groups within the community who already enjoy free guided tours led by our volunteers We are always looking for ways to engage with young people to help them to develop respect for our town’s heritage and to value our traditions and stories. Our free activity packs will provide a fun way of exploring our town’s past while providing an opportunity for younger and older members of the community to share ideas and stories and encouraging active citizenship and civic pride. (b) We recently acquired a large collection of legal documents dating from 1830s to 1930s, some in a fragile state. These form a valuable archive of historical information about Kilwinning and its inhabitants. Our project will enable volunteers to sort, clean and record the documents digitally and ensure their safe keeping under supervision of professional archivists. The project already has the attention of the National Council on Archives, Ayrshire Archives and North Ayrshire Council Culture & Heritage Team. As part of this bigger project, we are now seeking funding to buy specialist archive boxes to store documents safely so that a database can be created which will be of research value for future exhibitions, publications and presentations. The benefits to volunteers will be in skills development (professional training) and collaborative working by bringing people together to record local history. Timescale will be March – November 2023.
