Stoneyholm Mill Trust
Investment project code: 47
Summary
Description
The project will invite active contributions from local community groups and primary schools to understand the history of flax growing in Kilbirnie to produce linen. This will result in an understanding of local industry and how the land was a source of natural cloth which generated wealth through the textile industry. The funding will provide interactive sessions for each of the two primary schools in Kilbirnie, as well as materials to help pupils and the local community grow their own pot flax. The resulting plants will be used in demonstrations in community sessions at Kilbirnie Library.
Funds requested: £400
Interactive sessions £200 for schools and £100 for community session. Materials £100, e.g. pots, compost.
Location: Kilbirnie
Proposed on behalf of: This intergenerational project will encourage all ages to grow flax from seed and understand the process of producing linen and encourage a sense of pride in how Stoneyholm Mill contributed to the Scottish textile industry. By being involved in a community growing project it will have positive mental health for all participants with a common goal which has no barriers to involvement. It will have a legacy as the seeds will become part of Kilbirnie Library's Seed Library and it will also encourage participants to grow other plants and foster a love of the outdoors.
